You know what’s nice? Flashy. Flashy really works. Every year, the Stanley Cup is hoisted by a team chock full of flashy players.

And the team with more flashy players, more often than not, wins the series. It’s an upset when they don’t.

This team missed the playoffs because they only have one flashy player, and you need at least four or five, plus a goalie.

So don’t please please please don’t waste this pick on a corn fed D whose offense won’t show up at the next level, which is always what happens with “unflashy” Junior production.
If we draft Danielson, and he becomes an 80-90 point top-line C, would you be mad that he's not "flashy"?

Was Jarome Iginla "flashy"?

The rule is for 16 and 17 year olds. Alot of players play in other provinces.

I haven't watched Junior A in a long time but I don't remember that ever being a rule. I don't remember 16 year olds but I'm sure there were some out of province 17 year olds who played for our team the OCN Blizzard. I remember going to highschool with some.

I also think that the high-risk/high-reward players are the better picks than the low ceiling-high floor type players. That goes for all rounds of the draft. Third/fourth line players can easily be found in trades and free agency. Highly-skilled top six forwards and offensively-skilled defensemen are hard to come by and cost a lot to acquire if not drafted.

I understand the frustration when that high risk player doesn’t pan out. The nylander brothers are great examples of how it can go. Both were drafted at similar picks. One is a legit top line forward and the other bounces between the AHL and NHL. But I’d still take the risk.

Don’t reach. Don’t take a guy that everyone else has in the second round on their list. It’s so rare for that to work.

Yes, he was. He wasn’t showy and dangly, but he was a bull in a China shop superstar, and came with his share of flash. Screaming down the wing and blasting a missile slap shot off the far post and in is flashy.

Guys whose offence doesn’t jump off the page in Junior rarely if ever find another level in the pros. They settle as 3rd and 4th line pluggers.

Of course I wouldn’t be mad if we found a 90 point centre at 14. I just don’t think any player likely to be available at 14 is an especially good bet to become that.

Probably someone who will keep us finishing right around where we are this year, thus drafting around the same position haha.

This is the way...

If you look at a consolidated draft ranking list (EP, Future Considerations, THN, Bob McKenzie, Craig Button, Dobber Prospects, etc.) there are some nice prospects in that 14-16 range. Forwards like Oliver Moore, Riley Heidt and Colby Barlow for example. Not much ranked around there for D. Maybe a guy like Gulyayev. He's Russian so be forewarned but he looks to be an excellent puck-mover and he had a very strong season in the MHL.

There should be a good player available at 16. A guy that generally would probably be a top 10 pick in a different draft will probably be there.

Flames just have to pick the right guy.

Any of Cristall, Danielson, Barlow, or Heidt would be fine IMO.

Nice clip of Molendyk doing what he does eliminating Bedard et al. I probably can't embed a tweet.

Nope I can't

I hope we win the lottery and move up to 6th.

Any game changers at 6?

We could pick as high as 13th without winning the lottery, honestly there will be quite a good player available in that spot

Every time the Flames have picked sixth, we have been disappointed:

- Cory Stillman: beat the Flames to win the cup with Tampa (he also won beat the Oilers with Carolina, so that redeems him a bit)
- Daniel Tkaczuk: injuries
- Rico Fata: memorable meme only
- Sean Monahan: injuries

Let’s see if we can pick 5th instead

Also, we drafted Huberdeau's 8x10.5 contract at 6th overall

I like Barlow. He would probably be my pick if we were to land him.

If you want to play that game, we actually drafted that piece of paper 4th overall (if the rumoured offer for Tkachuk from NJD is to be believed)

I hope whoever we draft has crafty hands / high skill and some decent skating. I'm tired of slow 'good character' players.

I hope that we draft Noah Chadwik because he is the biggest western Canada (from Saskatoon) defenseman playing in the WHL. 6'4" 187#

We need more big western Canadian defensemen to help build up the teams character.

I don’t either.

But Sutter the GM did find Kiprusoff, kept Iggy twice, and his signees/draftees (Gio, Backlund, Brodie) were the backbone of the team up until very recently.

That’s all.
