Hamrlik was an awesome UFA signing.

Jaybo (1.25yrs x 6.68M) was traded on April 1 ahead of April 3 deadline and fetched:
- a 2013 1st (ended up 22oa)
- Berra (became a 2nd at 2014 TDL)
- Cundari (became nothing)
The only somewhat notable D traded in March/April were:
Mar 25: Douglas Murray (1.6M after retention) to PIT for two 2nds (one became Tyler Bertuzzi)
Mar 28: Iginla to PIT
Mar 30: Leopold (3M) to STL for 2nd + 5th
Apr 1: Regehr** (4.02M) to LAK for two 2nds (one became Cernak)
In June 2013 OTT received a 6th for 39 yo [but still quite productive] Gonchar (1x5.5M)
CGY acquired Russell from STL for a 5th... (possible 'future considerations' of the Jaybo trade? )
Into the season...
Jan 1 2014: Gleason (4M) for Liles (3.85M)
Jan 22: Del Zotto (2.55M) for Klein (2.9M)
2014 TDL:
Robidas (3.3M) for a 4th
Diaz (1.225M) for a 5th
Meszaros (retained down to 2M) for a 3rd
Nick Schultz (retained down to 1.75M) for a 5th
(Ryan Miller to STL, MSL to NYR, Gaborik to LAK 50% retained for a 2nd+3rd, Luongo back to FLA were the other notable TDL deals)
So you can't really point to a comparable trade to show that a greater return was out there. Maybe if they retained 50% for the rest of the deal they'd have gotten more, but consider that the only teams in the market for quality D were:
STL (where he went)
PIT (had already done the Murray and Iggy trades; would've been crazy for Feaster to work a Jaybo deal before expiring Iggy)
LAK coached by Darryl Sutter (take a wild guess who he'd prefer between Regehr and Jaybo...)
The extra year apparently wasn't a positive for anybody...including Murray Edwards. It also seems unlikely that holding him until the next TDL would have worked much better, as there were no bidding wars for expensive D.
**Weird follow up to the Regehr trade:
