I’m not particularly bothered one way or another, but I would suggest he wasn’t going to get plastered. He would have been hit, but right along the boards and well enough absorbed by position. He simply bailed out of a hockey play and it wasn’t a good look.
In terms of value, players try and salvage what’s left of an existing game to help set the tone or ‘send a message’ for the next, especially when they’re losing. Some will muck it up around the nets after the whistle a little more, others will try and fight, others will lay a big hit. For right or wrong on these incidents, at least they’re engaged, albeit sometimes a little too late in that particular game.
But quitting on a play is not well received, especially by guys blocking shots on the penalty kill all game, etc.
