I doubt Philly wants to take on Monahan's contract.
1. They'd be giving Calgary more cap flexibility to make Gaudreau an offer he can't refuse
2. They'd be making tougher on themselves to sign Gaudreau if he makes it to UFA

Put Monahan on IR, trade for Giroux and Toffoli. Activate Monahan for game 1 of the playoffs. That’s how good teams do it.

Calgary is likely 1 of about 14 teams that would make an offer for him.
The Avs are IMO 90% the team that he goes to IF he moves at all....its entirely up to him.

Add a rw and kerp everyone else doesn’t disrupt this team very much but could be a huge add to an already good team
Figure out monahan in the summer. He should go imo but the time isn’t now. If we are adding and removing too many players history shows high end trade deadline acquisitions often don’t produce as much on new team. This team is good enough if you add a toffolli to the mix

We all know that playoff is totally different game than mid season games. From last few year I learned that a good playoff team has at least 3 good lines to play for a long run. I'm sure other team will target Monahan line and they know how to play against him.
I don't expect Lindholm line constantly out score other team's best line. So we need strong second and third line.

Monahan will score some important goals when it matters this year.

I wonder how available Brock Boeser would be.
Scheifele would still be the dream though.

I think this team needs help down the middle and should target the best available C. BUT if they got a winger who could make Monahan good again, it would be huge. If Toffoli works, that would be massive but it's a risk because it might do nothing for Monahan at all. If management thinks they're close, they need to make a couple of big moves. A top 2 C to add some scoring has to be the #1 target, second has to be a good winger to try a d wake up Monahan. If they want to add to the back end, it should be someone cheap that will be a #6 or 7...not Gio.

The fly in the ointment is that to acquire Taffoli and his 2 year extended contract you may have to trade Monahan and a pick to get him. I'm pretty sure Treliving is aware of his cap issues in the summer. Picking up a player with term means somebodies going. Toffoli can fit for a playoff run to be sure and would be the perfect addition. Treliving isn't stupid he know exactly what he has on the plate this summer. Toffoli would help Monahan and the team but ask Vegas how it's going finding a deal to get Jack Eichel on the ice. Cap problems count.
Enjoy Zadarov while he's here because his cap space will be needed. Pitlick will save a bit more however everyone else is league min and needs to be replaced if they don't come back. I think Gudbranson might be the only exception and at 2 mill he's been a good value. Still even he may be cut loose.
I have to believe its a rental that will be acquired. Some don't think it's realistic however Giroux would be the best fit if he'd come here. Pavelski may or may not be available who knows. After that maybe Copp IF the Jets would let him go.

Eberle picked up his 14th goal of the season last night. 31 year old RH RW, makes $5.5 million / year with a M-NTC till 2024. Might come cheaper than Toffoli, no idea if he would be available or would come back to Alberta.

I still think a Dvorak/Toffoli package would be great for the Flames to pick up.
We all know why Toffoli is a good fit and I think Dvorak suits the type of game Sutter wants to play. If you have 2 guys making at or above $10M on the cap like the Flames likely will next year it is nice to have your other top 6 forwards slot under $5M and the Flames could have that in Lindholm, Toffoli, and Dvroak.

It's funny that people are lamenting cap space, but overlook Lucic's $5.25M salary while playing on the 3rd/4th line. Here is potential found money. He's only owed a million in real salary as he receives the majority ($3M) in signing bonus come July. Flames could encourage his retirement in the summer and offer him a role within the organization ( I see him as a future coach), freeing up $5.25M in cap space. This would be a smart move by the team and free up some much needed room to retain a contract with term brought in at the trade deadline.

I like Lucic's play and he's helping younger players. I'd be surprised if he steps back when he just re-juvenated his career to some extent. I get the idea but it's a stretch and not likely what Mgt is counting on happening.

That guys a pillow. He's the re-incarnation of Inge Hammerstrom who "could go in a corner with a pocketful of eggs and not break one".

Well, it’s cap circumvention. If they were San Jose or LA maybe they get away with it. Or Lucic could go on LTIR and also go to work for the league like Pronger IIRC.

How is it cap circumvention? If a player choses to retire, that's his decision. What the team does after that retirement is a completely different action. As you've pointed out, there are a lot more shady things that have happened and nothing has come of it.

Eberle lives in Calgary during the offseason. Doubt he would have issue coming here.

Your post implies it’s worked out beforehand. Which is classic cap circumvention. There’s a reason you never see guys retire early in a contract and take a job with the org.

I said "encourage" him to retire. Didn't say there would be a guaranteed employment offer, just musing about future possibilities. What happens after that retirement is between consenting parties. Unless there is language in the CBA that puts a time limit on employment after a retirement, that would be on the up-and-up. No cap circumvention there.
