I think we’ll have to see how much he adds in the playoffs. His physicality is pretty hard to replace. That physicality is gonna be huge come playoff time.

I think re-signing one is a possibility, but not both. I don't think Treliving would want two inexperienced/rookie guys on the 3rd pair, but he'll be happy to have one of either Valimaki or Mackey play there next year.
My money on re-signing is probably Gudbranson because he likely won't get many offers from other teams and can be had relatively cheap for his level of experience.
Agreed! Gudbranson's game and perhaps his Stock have risen a notch or two above his historical past and I'm guessing even he recognizes that Sutter's overall defensive zone system has been a part of that improvement! My guess is he's likely to want to continue to play for Darryl and unless he gets a Home Run contract from some other GM we'll see him back the an extended contract! Right now....I'm all in favour of that

I'd be stunned if he doesn't take the highest value contract he can get, unless he get's an offer from a team in a low income tax state where he may take less gross money to get the best net. Still he might even shy from that without some sort of trade protection. I think Zadorov is adaptable enough that he's not too concerned about who he plays for, and is well aware that they can change in an instant. His summer interviews indicate that he's a pretty smart guy and that the only thing that won't change is the dollar value of his next contract.
Simply put the Flames won't be able to afford him next year, and as has been noted, they do have a couple of younger guys that they need to grab one of the spots in the lineup. Gudbransson on the other hand may be more willing to look beyond the compensation number in terms of where he opts to go next year. But if the Flames do very well, he might find a bit more interest in the market for his services in the summer.

Honestly was a huge supporter of the deal when it was signed. I became a fan of Zadorov when the Avs crushed us. He kept punishing our players and running our show. After game 1, we simply had no answer. Great to see him blossom under Sutter. I hope we can keep him in the offseason for a reasonable deal.

Another Russian interview with Zadorov. No English subtitles though.
Video is very well-made. Calgary looks fantastic in the video, hope Z feels the same way about the city.
Thanks, I watched half already. I can try and get around to translating the Zadorov parts.
That said there are several discussions about Canada vs. the US, about things like COVID, the healthcare system and so on. I don’t want this to turn into a politics discussion, so do you guys prefer me to leave those parts out?

That’s nuts, a full 3h video, and Zadorov in there for most of the 3h talking everything from politics to cars.
Behind the scenes Dome stuff you don’t see much anywhere else; I’ve never seen the ice chart for the Dome.
This guy obviously is worth the time for Russian NHlers to open up to.

Yeah, it's pretty easy for threads to go off rails so omitting the polemic stuff is probably a good idea.

I'd love to read anything you're willing to translate, including any covid/political stuff if it's part of the video. If we as a community can't conduct ourselves civilly around that then that's on us as individuals for failing to be able to communicate like intelligent people.
...but besides all that, I'd love for coverage like this to be done with more players (and hopefully some of it in english). Getting a behind the scenes look at the Flames would be awesome.

But none of them who might be ready are a RS, and its abundantly clear now that Darryl prioritizes a LH/LD and a RH/RD over anything else.
Someone else will be brought in at that spot if its not EG.

Yeah, I didn't read the post I quoted well enough. Zadorov, I think will go to whatever team can give him the best contract. He's at the age where his time to get paid is now.
Gudbransson on the other hand, might look for a situation that suits him, and be willing to stay put if he can get a deal for more than one year. The Flames are his 6th team since the start of the 2018 season, and he's been traded in season each of the last 3 years. So it's not unreasonable to think that he'd like to try and stay in the same place for more than one year. He's played well enough thus far to earn another contract.

Z 2nd Interview
I'll start with parts that are more Flames related, and go from there. So here's quick part about Sutter and being healthy scratched and so on. It takes a while though as 3 mins of conversation take up a whole page. I will try to make one of these each day until you guys get bored of it.
Sutter, and healthy scratch
Starting @ 2:37:47 - 2:41:00
Interviewer: During the summer you told me that the toughest part of your career was when you were sent down to the AHL. This year you were a healthy scratch for 5 games. Why do you think that happened?
Zadorov: Because I was playing like #### for 2 games. That's how I lost my spot in the lineup.
I: They wanted to have you there though?
Z: They did, but it doesn't work that way with this coach.
I: But there are usually some accommodations/good-will
Z: Not with this coach, there are no guarantees.
I: None at all?
Z: If you play like #### you sit, and if you play well you're playing.
I: When Sutter was asked about why you're not in the line-up told the reporters that "If you play well you play. If you don't you don't.". That didn't sound like a comment by an NHL coach.
Z: 2 Stanley cups.
I: Yes, 2 Stanley cups, nothing you can say to it. However, it seems pretty rough and unpleasant towards his own underlings/co-workers/staff. When you read that stuff did you enjoy it?
Z: Yes, it's rough, of course I didn't enjoy it, but what do you want me to do? go cry about it?
I: I noticed that during your practice today that while Sutter was on the ice everyone means business. As soon as he leaves, the assistant coaches stay on the ice and everyone is much more relaxed, laughing and so on. The same way I heard that if Sutter notices you wink at say Kucherov before the game, you will be punished/sitting.
Z: Yes, Sutter calls it: "cutting deals". If you speak to the opposition's players on the red line during warm-ups, you're in deep. If he sees you...
I: What if it's another Russian player? It doesn't matter?
Z: It doesn't matter, you'll probably sit for 10 games for that.
I: I always thought about the NHL having more modern approaches but this seems pretty old school.
Z: Yeah, those things don't fly.
I: Did you receive being a healthy scratch the right way, since you won your spot in the line-up back soon after?
Z: Like I said, I wasn't going to cry about it.
I: What was going on in your head during that time?
Z: Obviously I was worried, I didn't like it. It infuriated me, so I put the work in and tried to get back in the line-up.
I: Did you put in the work? or did you call Dan(Zadorov's agent) to outline the problem.
Z: Of course, I also called Dan, and Dan called me. Just normal communication outlining the situation. I'll tell you this though neither Dan, nor any other agent will influence Darryl Sutter in his coaching decisions.
I: Does such adversity temper and help you improve yourself as a player and your career? As in does it make you think about doing some things wrong in the way you play?
Z: Of course, they temper you, and make you better. It depends on a person's expectations though. I have higher expectations from myself than sitting in the press box. It's rather simple, in situations like this there are two options: to give up or to push forward.
*** Skipped some questions about the athletic ***
@2:43:00-2:43:45
I: You already spent half a season here, do you have any thoughts about the future?
Z: No comments for now.
I: Do one year contracts bother your?
Z: Well obviously I would've liked a longer contract.
I: For how many years?
Z: 15, can we arrange that? Honestly, I don't know. It depends on how it will go and what I will earn with my play. There's no point in discussing it right now, as I have a contract.

I don't expect Zadorov to be here next year. With our pending free agents he's too expensive for a 3rd pairing guy going forward. He's been really solid lately though.

What does "cutting deals" with opposition players mean? Is that a thing in the NHL that would aggravate a head coach?
Well Z said cutting deals in English the rest in Russian. I assume what Sutter means by "cutting deals" are situations like - I won't hit you as hard if you don't dangle around me this game. Something along those lines.

I have been a fan of his game but really don’t see a spot for Big Z moving forward. He likely wants a top 4 spot and/or money so I think he loses his spot to Valimaki and the team works to get Kylington locked up to a 3-4 year deal around Zadorov’s current cap hit
