Everyone is praising the Eriksson-Ek signing because he's such a solid defensive centreman. Anyone who's watched him the last few years know he plays almost identically to Backlund, they even skate the exact same
I feel Backlunds never got his due as one of the best shutdown centres in the league year after year, he should be in the Selke conversation the same way Eriksson-Ek was. I'm happy Eriksson-Ek got attention this year, but Backlund has had just as good or better seasons for nearly a decade playing the same role
Even this season, Backlund had 32 points Eriksson-Ek had 30 with more games played than Backlund. It's not just about points, but Backlund has consistently played against teams #1 centres and he holds his own every night

I agree completely.
Those wanting to run Gio and Backlund out of town (to save on cap) have no appreciation for what this will do to Calgary's on ice team. Luckily management does appreciate those players, although it remains to be seen if they can afford the cost of keeping Gio around next year.

Eliminating 6+ million on the cap would go a long way for this group, and would be a good shake up to the existing core.
Seattle could be a fresh start for them, and a potential to get into their top 6. With 2 years left on his deal, it could be attractive for them

They have? Who said no? What was offered? I don't remember any of this.
Also, this is the most ridiculous idea I've heard in regards to expansion. Monahan has scored at least 20 goals every season except for last, plays the most valuable position in the game, has a reasonable cap hit and you are suggesting he has 0 value? Absolutely insane.

It seems to have been common knowledge that Johnny and Monny's names were floated around last offseason, but Calgary didn't pull the trigger on anything. It doesn't mean in any way they were looking to dump them, simply means they may have wanted to get an idea of their potential trade value.
Likely happens to lots of players during the offseason.

Crazy that the Kraken like Duchene enough to entertain taking him on for five years. I don’t understand why NHL GM’s love this guy.

Article seemed like a fan boy article. If Seattle is taking 5 years of that contract it will cost a couple of firsts.

Seattle selects Mark Giordano, flips him to Edmonton with salary retained and bing-badda-boom, the Oilers have their seventh Giordano!

Pretty sure he'd retire first.

He has a NTC anyway, and I bet Edmonton’s on the list.

That's not what the rumor was. It will probably cost Nashville something decent to get Seattle to agree, and the downside for Seattle is minimal. Duchene looks pretty terrible the last few years but he's a decent middle 6 center with speed at the least, and Seattle needs to make it to the cap floor!

They can do that without taking on horrible contracts, which would actually give them a shot at winning.

Scooping up some primo UFAs gets them to the Cap Floor too. And why not? The relative out-of-the-gate success of Vegas being a prime example.

The rules require Seattle to take a combined cap hit for next season of at least 60% of the cap ($48.9 million) in the expansion draft, so they will likely need to take a few big money deals.
Of course, that's only an average of $1.63 million per team, so they shouldn't need to take very many big contracts to offset any RFA or small-money players that they take. They definitely shouldn't need to take on any absolute disaster deals like Duchene's just to hit the floor.

This isn't taking on one year of Giordano at $6.7 million which they can walk away from in a year or flip him at the deadline for draft picks. It's 5 x $8 million a season for a player that hasn't eclipsed 60 points in a season since 2014 and hasn't eclipsed 20 goals since his last year in Ottawa. He's arguably the most overrated NHL player over the last decade and there are better ways to meet the cap floor than flushing $40 million down the toilet. Even if the Predators throw in a 1st round pick and a prospect it's far from worth it for the Kraken.

It should cost Nashville a huge amount to move that contract.

I have a feeling they're gonna take Ryan McDonagh from Tampa, so that's $6m right there

Tampa should have a good crack at some decent defensemen as most teams will have to expose a top 4 player. I see them going with a forward from TB. Not looking like many skilled forwards will be available and they should have a chance to grab one from TB Tyler Johnson, Mathieu Joseph or perhaps even Palat.
Taking Duchene just seems dumb, Francis could be fired before the puck is even dropped.
