Those are just the top 10 picks.

Here is their draft history, lots of top picks, 1st rounders and lots of mediocrity

Fair enough.

I am rooting for Toronto personally, would love for them to be in a position to move a forward out West to a certain team that needs one.

Calgary would, historically. The Flames would be stretching to claim 20%:

Valimaki/Pelletier - we'll see
Tkachuk - check
Bennett - ummm - maybe?
Monahan - check
Poirier - nope
Klimchuk - nope
Janko - nope
Sven - nope
Erixon - nope
Neimisz - nope
Backs - check
Irving - nope
Pelech - nope
Chucko - nope
Dion - I guess?
Nystrom - meh
Kobasew - meh
Krahn - nope

Dion played over 1000 games in the NHL and put up nearly 500 points and he's an 'I guess'? LOL

if the Oilers win, they'll have as many #1 picks as Stanley Cups.

what bugs me is some of that fanbase actually thinking the NHL 'owes' them the pick and how they 'deserve' to get the pick...just an awful fanbase...

At least they parlayed Sven into Rasmus. So at least they still managed to get value for that pick. Same can't be said for a lot of the other players on that list.

He is for me, as a Flame. But sure, go ahead and put him in the "success category". It doesn't change the picture.

If you're just gauging his time as a Flame, wouldn't it be an even more resounding yes? He was nominated for the Calder his first year, and the Norris his second year. I'd argue he's had more individual success as a Flame than most 1st round picks from the Flames.

His first year was awesome. I didn't think he deserved the Norris nod over Gonchar, Campbell or Markov, but that's me. But moreover, I just think he became a symbol of disappointment. I just don't think he merits a "here's a pick we're proud of" status. He's not on the level of Tkachuk, Monahan or Backlund for me.

My order for winning 1st overall:

Florida
Pittsburgh
Minnesota
New York
Toronto
Nashville
Winterpeg
The NHL folds.

Those are my top 8 preferences.

If Lafreniere is going to be another truly amazing and entertaining player to watch, I would prefer he ends up in the West with a team that we can see play more often, but who aren't in the same division and we don't have a rivalry with. So, Winnipeg, Nashville and Minnesota all work for me.

Edmonton is obviously the worst possible result, both as a fan of hockey and as a human being with empathy for a promising young person who has their whole future ahead of them.

One should cancel the other. A banner should come down each time.

I only cherry picked Dion as the most glaring miss on your list.

Kobasew and Nystrom (who you missed) both played 600 games in the show.

Sven was pretty mediocre, but Flames turned him into Rasmus before he was a total bust in the NHL.

Jankowski is meh obviously. Could still play 500+ games with a change of team and opportunity.

Bennett is on his way to a long career as a solid third liner.

Also all those Flames first rounders that missed were in the mid 20's. They usually miss. All those Florida picks were top 10's! Not to mention the Flames are batting close to 1000 for top 10's (depending on how you feel about Bennett).

You also have to look at where in the first round players were drafted.

There can be big difference in drop off points and tiers depending on the year. A 20-30 overall pick often doesn't have a better chance than a 2nd rounder of having a long, impacting NHL career. A top 5 bust is more damning than mid or late round bust.

Mostly agree with your list:
But for some context the best players in the next 20 picks:
Bennett - The next 3 were (Dal Colle, Vitanen, Fleury). Nylander/Ehlers/Fiala/Larkin/Tuch/Fabbri/Kapanaen went in the first round, but were not ranked in the same tier as Bennett.
In a pefect world the team could have gone with Nylander/Ehlers but with Gaudreau/Hudler leading the charge they probably wanted some size/grit.

Poirier/Klimchuk - were Theodore/Burakovsky/Hartman/Jarry. So other than Theodore, turned out there wasn't a ton of talent available in that part of the draft.

Janko - The best players after him were Matheson/Maata/Skjei/Pearson. So overall not the worst pick - considering how many misses there were, and none of those guys are game breakers (yet).

Tkachuk - I think you can argue he is the second best player in that draft behind Mathews. The Other in contention are Laine/Mcavoy. So we have to be pretty thankful to get that at 5 with Puujarvi, Juulevi going in front of him.

Phaneuf - Although he played 1k games the pick looks a lot worse when you look at the talent after him - Carter/Brown/Seabrook/Parise/Getzlaf/Burns/Kesler/Richards/Perry

Frolik (10th)
Olesz (7th)
Horton (3rd)

Weiss (4th)

Since 2001 as top 10 picks which includes 7 top 4 picks. They've had plenty of chances to screw up prospects and they have.

A team like Minnesota and Nashville deserve it imo, expansion teams of the last 20 years that have tried their hardest to win and not tank.

As much as I dislike Winnipeg, I'd be ok with them getting it to.

Toronto / Pittsburgh / Edmonton / Florida have had plenty of top picks in last 20 years.
NYR get all the UFAs and prospects they want.
Haven't drafted higher than 10 since Ekblad in 2014, but yeah, Florida, they're really the problem. It's been a while, and all teams go through a cycle of getting top picks. 2001 is a long way to go back. A lot of the guys before Huberdeau are either out of the league or on their way out. The team would have turned the entire roster over from then even if they turned into a great team. Other teams have had multiple versions with maybe one or two players consistent over that time frame.

I get that people hate on Florida because they haven't been successful and they don't fill the building (those two things are linked), but there are plenty of teams that nobody blanches at when they get several top picks in a row and then run with it.

Minnesota is absolutely the spot I want him to end up.

Amazing fans and just no real success to speak of. Let them win this. They've also never really tanked.

I agree. If any of the 8 teams deserve 1st overall it's the Wild. Despite joining the league as an expansion team they have only drafted top 5 twice and one being their inaugural season. They have been in that purgatory for a decade where they are not bad enough to draft top 5 and just good enough to miss/make the playoffs. They have great fans but a perennial mediocre team to cheer for.

Hoping that Florida gets it. These perennial loser teams are not good for the league unless were talking about the Oilers of course.
