Can't see any big moves from the Flames at this point.

I would be pleasantly surprised.

Of course this post is going to get a ton of thanks - duh.

But the fans of this team have been starving for success for years only to be disappointed time and time again.

Cue the usual excuses from Flames management.

I don't blame people for being fed up.

I think fans want trades to improve from mediocrity to contention now. It is not an unreasonable desire. Those trades are not happening for us, unfortunately, while they are happening for other teams. If GM believes in the team being a contender, he should go and make aggressive trades happen to improve team's chances. If he doesn't believe that the team is a contender, he should aggressively sell and get picks. When nothing happens, the signal is "everything is fine", when we know it's not; then mediocrity seems to be a preferred "safe" route and that is very disappointing to observe for the past few deadlines.

We're not the Oilers, we won't just hunker down and accept a mediocre team year in and year out.

Rather than signalling "everything is fine", the lack of deals may simply mean "the long term cost was too much for a short term gain". I believe that is most likely the case for the Flames.

FYP

The Oilers have been historically bad. Not mediocre.

Last year at on this date:
St.Louis had 72 points
St.Louis made one trade at the trade deadline for Michael Del Zotto who played 7 games for them and 0 in the playoffs

Calgary this year 70 points and acquired at least one defenseman who will play regularly, probably 2.

The biggest trades of the trade deadline day last year:
Vegas got Mark Stone - lost in the 1st round
Nashville got the good Granlund - lost in the 1st round
Winnipeg got Kevin Hayes - lost in the 1st round

So, Calgary used a 2020 3rd and 2021 conditional 4th to add Forbort, a 27 year old defensive defenceman that is used to averaging 20 tough minutes a night (he did this the past three years), and Gustafsson, a 27 year old offensive defenceman with similar play to Hanifin. That seems reasonable.

I'm good with the Flames day, the big work with this team needs to be done in the offseason, as you don't make big franchise altering changes at the trade deadline.

Only deal I would have liked the Flames to be in on was the Trocheck deal but to me it feels like Florida really targeted Wallmark there.

Interested to see if news changes on Hamonic or Gio at all now. Feel like adding two d-men means that at least one of them is out longer term, maybe even until the playoffs.

I don't think there is any reasonable comparison between Hanifin and Gustafsson.

Why not just give up the 2021 4th(what COL gave up) we dealt for Forbort for Namestnikov instead. Probably would be more useful than Forbort for us.

Because we need to spend a 4th round pick on a !@#$ defenceman so we can scratch Kylington - just like last season!
