This is so tragic to me. Of all the missteps in the last year or so this would really hurt my support of Brad. Hamonic is an old school "whack the puck up the ice" defenseman that we have now learned destroys possession which drives team success.
Brad got caught up in a player that announced he wanted to play in Western Canada when 90% of players run away from here. The way he is playing and the contract he can command combined with his age is a "trade him at the deadline and run away with whatever you get" scenario.
A Hamonic extension will be so frustrating to me, like so frustrating. He is not a guy you extend, he's a guy you sell on. Unfortunately, as well as Brad has done in certain areas I suspect the speculation is correct and I bet Brad sees sunk value in what he paid for Hamonic that he wants to retain/justify. That sucks if true.

Unless hamonic comes in at about half whatever Brodie signs, keeping hamonic over Brodie may be a dumber move than the trade that brought hamonic here in the first place.
We are going to learn much about this young gm in the couple months. Sure hope he is smarter over the next Year than he's been over the past year.

I think we're being set up for a really poor GM performance over the next few months.
Our team is decimated by defense injuries and I really fear that our goal has changed to just shore up our defense and not trade anyone for future offensive help now. That would be so disheartening when the team looks to be too weak to contend as is. So basically we're likely going to shift gears to shoring up our defense before the trade deadline so we can...…...tread water and fight for a playoff spot with no hope of contending?
What a disaster
- Almost picking Zucker/Kadri, deals fall through
- Valimaki injured killing any chance of further off season moves to bolster forwards
- Brodie and Hamonic won't negotiate during season
- So we will trade one for a top 6 guy
- Gio gets hurt, Hamonic gets hurt
- Now we likely won't get a top 6 forward for the future because we need our two pending UFA defenseman just to keep our Defense afloat
- Brodie has bounced back and looks like a good defenseman that you'd want to re-sign, but the Flames likely have info that he's going UFA
- So now we're going to sign a pretty much guaranteed regrettable contract in Hamonic, while letting Brodie walk for nothing because we have to keep this mediocre 2019/2020 team with their eyes on the prize of mediocre, uninspired play to maybe grab a wild card spot and get knocked out with a slight breeze. Plus we'll now likely pay a price for a another defenseman that helps this ****ing season. Disaster.

Nice recap to the season while blaming the GM. What would you do with the injuries and no-trade clauses? Maybe we could trade Jankowski and Stone for Crosby.

Hamonic is not a “whack the puck up the ice” guy. When he has support he actually has a pretty effective outlet pass. Stone is the guy who rings the puck to the other team.

It definitely won't be a popular opinion on here, but I think Hamonic is not even close to being as bad as people here say. If Brad has to trade Brodie to get a value trade back, I would hope he re-signs Hammer.

This is an unpopular opinion.
In a made-up world where Gio, Hamonic, and Valimaki are healthy by the deadline, it might be wise to trade Brodie and keep Hamonic (I don’t want the Flames to resign Hamonic). His value is very high.
Also, that could be why Treliving was gonna trade Brodie for a top 6 forward per TSN. Teams want Brodie, who is having an excellent season. Teams do not want Hamonic. I don’t think we can criticize Treliving for being willing to trade Brodie if he was the asset capable of getting the top 6 forward.

Re: The Hamonic talks
Friedman said they talked prior to the season starting, it didn't go all that well so they will put it off until after the season.
So, no talks during the season.

Pinder and Steinberg last week mentioned they heard things were getting closer so Freidman could easily be wrong. They were talking about extending Brodie and mentioned they heard the club was more focused on Hamonic and that common ground may have been reached.

Depends on the term and money being asked by both.
If Brodie wants 6M at max term then no thanks. Maybe the Flames can get Hamonic at 3 years at less than $5M per?

I think Hamonic will play for under $5M in the right situation, including Calgary. Anyone who trades for him is looking at signing him IMO.

The shorter the term the better for Hamonic. That being said, I'm hoping Pinder & Steinberg are off on this.

It was a really bad decision by Brad to specifically injure Giordano, Hamonic and Valimaki.
I'm not sure what he was thinking there

Injuries happen and none of these are catastrophic IMO. They shouldn't change the team's plans for the present or the future.

Frolik is the new Glencross.
Thinking back, that was one hell of a lopsided trade for us!

I dunno.
Buffalo is an absolute black hole of success right now. If you're not leeching points of Eichel, there's literally nothing going on there. It's absolutely shocking that a team with both a generational #1 centre and #1 defender is so bad. Buffalo's drafting is atrocious. When they aren't spoon fed an obvious choice they totally bungle it.

I think you've pretty much nailed it.
I think when Giordano went down, the Flames were heavily searching for a defensive addition.
I think Giordano's injury is worse than they are saying because they are being coy with the trade market on how badly they are looking for a defender and don't want to betray their position.
I think Hamonic getting hurt right now probably results in him signing a better contract with the Flames than he otherwise would have. If he's injured through the deadline instead of being a tradeable asset, the pressure will be on to both
1) Not lose him for nothing come free agency
2) utilize him down the stretch for the playoff push.
#2 probably means him playing injured, and I don't think he's willing to sacrifice UFA money by risking further injury, so the Flames will have to pony up up on a deal to get him to suit up in the final games of the season.
