When Gio did it in overtime it worked.
Playing a 2-1 when a nice pass is made is very difficult to stop. It's hard to visualize that from the TV. However, the goalie has to play the shot, or the shooter will see him cheating and shoot. The defenceman can't rush the shooter, or they will get a very clean pass off. If the defenceman covers the potential pass target, then it essentially becomes a breakaway, which has much better scoring odds than a 2 on 1.
Sliding can be a solid play, but the timing has to be right. Ideally the defenceman wants to put themselves in a position that blocks the pass while decreasing the shooting angle as much as possible.

Defending a clear two-on-one is a hope and pray situation. You want to try and block that pass, but you also don't want to give the other player a total one-on-one with the goalie (like what happened when Tkachuk got caught back). A lot of times there's not a whole lot you can do against a nice shot or pass. If a two-on-one doesn't result in a goal it's either a great defensive play, a great save, or a flubbed opportunity.

Couple of things:
-In the third CGY was making short passes from d into the middle. They were carrying it in or at least attacking with the puck - sometimes they got to the blue line and put it deep. Prior to that it looked similar to the system Gulutzan wanted (d long pass up the wall, forward chip it in and chase).
They just looked more themselves in the third. Aggressive, attacking, carrying the puck with confidence - just making plays.
-The Andersson Kylington pair were making things happen but just playing with speed and bravado. The more they play the better. They are just fearless and I think it spills over to the team. If you want confident play that pairing's TOI has to go up. Play the guys who are feeling it and ride or die with them.
It is confidence and fearlessness the team was lacking. Play to make plays, play to win all the time. No defensive shells, no sitting back. Pressure, make plays, have fun.

Why are there so many Oiler fans texting 960 today to complain that McDavid did a similar move at some point lol?

It is how Vegas has played their whole existence, and it is winning hockey in the current NHL.

Disagree, when you score more than your opponent after the final buzzard, you deserved the 2 points. Moreover, none of the goal was an own goal by the opponent, and you might say one was lucky goal, but you have to lucky to be good and you have to be good to be lucky.

I still want to see more of that Mean Sonahan though.

Sometimes it feels like you have more negative posts towards “cpers” than the trolls have about their favourite players to harp on.

I was on the comments section of some website, can' t remember where now-ugh might have been yahoo. anyways not where I usually migrate and the discussion was equal between 'holy crap best goal in a long time' and 'insert player X from my team scored a goal like that last week/month/year..yawn'
I don't know if people didn't watch the goal or don't appreciate the nuance but its not just the fact that it was between the legs, which yes I'm sure happens occasionally in other scenarios especially around the slot, versus the speed/angle/urgency/skill of this particular goal not to mention the surrounding circumstances (walk off game winner of a ridiculous comeback game etc)

Nobody has scored a between the legs goal from that far out. McDavid was like a foot away from the net like Matty last season

I can't remember the game, may have been the Panthers game. But Gelinas was on after hours on 960 and he said that Monahan came to them (coaching staff) and said that. That he wanted to play a more physical game and a better defensive game.

In close, player mostly standing still, yeah, lots of players have done that.
One timing a rebound at speed - into the top corner? Much more difficult.

True, but doesn't change my assessment. Rittich wasn't caught cheating, it was just a nice move and a great shot. He played for the shot and still got beat by it, that happens. But on the passes, he gave himself little chance by how far out of his net he was.

I’ve overheard people talking about the goal in multiple random places today and yesterday. City is buzzing about last game.
The players must feel it too....that is a potential season igniter
