That slot coverage... can't help but wonder if the team is playing too aggressive a system without the horses (footspeed) to do so.

The Flames missed about 3 great chances before and right after the PP with Monahan and JG just missing in the high slot. Backlund's soggy fish stick shot from the slot as another half chance.
The games they have won, those chances have gone in to get confidence and settle things down.
Now they are scrambling and it Peters system where things go quick, scrambling too much makes things a lot worse.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Time for Rittich. On pace to lose 9-0
Make that 12-0 if the Pens get 48 shots

K THAT one you can blame on Smith. Only way the 5 hole is bigger is if he takes his pads off

That right there is the problem with the Flames.
They aren't dangerous with the puck. They had an opportunity to do something, blow it as always, other team counters, and the puck ends up in the net.
The whole roster stinks.

Don't think it's foot speed. But it is making quick decisions on being agressive. Peters is more agressive and players are taking that extra half second to push up rather then hold back. As a result, if they lose the puck or make a wrong decision, now they are that much more out of position and tougher to get back into it.

It's pretty simple. How often is Smith better then the goalie on the other end of the ice? Once this season by my count.
D needs to be better. Forwards need to be better defensively. PP needs to be better. It isn't all on Smith. But goal has been a big weakness this season and unless Rittich can keep up his play with a starters load we are in for a long season if Smith can't pull it together.
