According to Treliving, Mangiapane has a big ass and Dube has a little prick. Or is a little prick. Or has a little prick in him. It wasn’t clear.

Took my son to the game and had a great time.

Like most, I thought the big guys, Dube, Foo, Mangiapanne, Kylington, Valimaki and Parsons looked quite good.

Dube stood out as the best of the bunch though. He skates quick, thinks, quick, shoots quick. A really dynamic player.

Foo also looked really good, damn does he ever work hard out there.

Mangiapanne just like his two linemates can skate, pass, and shoot. All 3 are very effective hockey players and all 3 have the tools to play in the NHL IMO.

Valimaki was very stable back there and can rush the puck up the ice no problem. Made a bunch of nice passes, just what you'd like to see from a d man like him. Also, I know it was a rookie game but he seemed like the strongest D man out there. I mean physically. Really good at positional play along the boards.

Was nice to see Kylington play a more reserved game. He's come a long ways I'd say. Still makes some questionable decisions though his skating ability can save him.

Parsons was awesome. The only bad thing about that was the team gave up quite a few scoring chances, and prime ones at that. But the way he played was very similar in style to Kipper.

Other guys that stood out:

Healey. The guy plays just like his highlight videos, ALWAYS finishes his checks, ALWAYS takes the body. He definitely had the Oilers thinking about his presence on the ice.

Gawdin. Seems like a smart, effective hockey player. Liked what I saw from him and noticed I was checking who he was on the roster sheet a couple times.

Ruzicka. Didn't notice him throughout the whole game but a few moments where he weaved in and out of the opposing teams forwards and defense. Has really nice hands for a big guy, not the fastest though.

Phillips. I know he had 3 points but I honestly didn't seem him do much. He's so small out there and doesn't have that quick turning, change direction agility like Gaudreau. didn't seem like he generated much but again he did have 3 assists. I just dont see how he can exceed at the NHL level, but what do I know.

All in all a good showing from the rookies. And i liked that Cail MacLean said afterwards. That it was an 'ok' game but theres a lot of work to do as Parsons should not have to make that many saves off of odd man rushes and missed plays etc. I agree, some bad breakdowns led to glorious scoring chances for the Oilers but Parsons was there to shut the door.

This game left me really excited to see Dube in the main camp and exhibition games. He really stood out to me.

Bouchard sees the ice really well, has a cannon for a shot.

But he looks tippy on his skates, he got bowled over by Mangiapane in the 2nd which was noticeable but even his foot placements on uncontested plays leave a wobble in his ankles.

Have to admit I was watching for it though.

I thought Mangiapane was the best player on the ice. Hard to ignore Dube's goal, but Mangiapane is so strong on his skates for a little guy. Really stands out.

Phillips had a lazy start with the two off sides, but was really noticeable the rest of the way.

I thought Kylington showed he's really learning to pick his spots and had a good game. He needs to stop telegraphing passes though, too obvious.

Valimaki was trying to do too much early but settled in and looked really good in the second half of the game. Interesting to see how far up in the play he hangs out (both coming out of his own zone, and pressuring the forwards in the Oilers zone). He's on the edge to make things happen at all times.

Parsons can over commit but man that kid is quick. He's like Kiprusoff on red bull.

No such luck. Had the Oilers won there would have been a media saturation of post-game coverage on their site, but since they lost it is being virtually ignored.

The Flames prospects were very good at being opportunistic and taking advantage of some really weak goaltending. Both teams looked like a bunch of juniors and minor leaguers. I thought the Oilers made more skill plays with the puck and were ahead of the Flames in their ability to move the puck as a team. The Flames beat the Oilers in the north-south game, badly. It was very much reflective of the big clubs. Oilers had an advantage in the sizzle, but the Flames had the advantage in the cut of the meat that matters.

The only two players that really stood out to me, for the right reasons, were Kylington and Phillips. Kylington really surprised me with his well rounded game. He was solid in both ends of the ice and looked like he was above this level. Phillips impressed me with his thinking of the game. Made some really impressive plays that generated some quality scoring chances. Too bad he is so tiny. Still has a very long way to go.

I wasn't as impressed as some with the play of the prospects, especially Parsons. We already knew his strength was his athleticism and his ability to make the circus save. What I wanted to see was more composure in the crease and better positional play. I saw the same player that we saw last year, one who is still fighting his own aggressive instincts and over challenges. If he's going to make the NHL he needs to get better at being positionally sound, making the easy save, and controlling his rebounds so he doesn't need to make the big acrobatic save. He's still very much a work in progress.

The rest of the lineup was pretty much what you would expect in a battle of minor league teams. I saw some flashes of good play that was lost in a sea of inconsistency. Not many really impressed by being dominant in a game against minor leaguers and junior players. If you're going to fight for a job on the NHL roster you have to be dominant and noticeable in games like this. I didn't see that with the exception of Kylington. With the NHL roster pretty much set, it is going to be difficult for anyone to force their way into the mix without a standout performance. It was nice to see the Flames light up the Oilers though.

One last point, it's gotta be pretty tough being an Oilers fan and having to sit through that mess. The players you hoped to standout really didn't, or did so for all the wrong reasons. Bouchard got his goal, but he also looked like a pylon out there for many shifts. The kid needs to improve his skating something fierce. Bear, who they are already counting on making an impact, was one of the worst players on the ice. Yamamoto was invisible in a game where he should have been dominant. Just a flat out demoralizing game for the set that is always living off the hype.
Interesting that only Phillips and Kylington stood out to you. I thought Kulington was the 2nd best Dman out there (close second) and Phillips maybe the 4th or 5th best forward.

I still have a tough time seeing an NHLer yet in Kylington. I think hes trending in the right direction but not quite there yet. None of the D playing in this Game will be on the full time NHL Roster to Start, Valimaki and Kylington will see games this season though.

Dube and Mangiapane were Electric out there and good enough to be in the NHL. That being said no reason not to play Dube as 1C in Stockton this season.

I thought it was a pretty scrappy game in general.

I'm not sure I saw anyone stand out there on the ice as being a sure fire NHLer.

Oilers goaltending was not good yesterday.

Dube, Parsons, Mangiapne, and Valimaki looked good for the Flames.

Jones, and Benson for the Oilers. Benson had 3-4 plays where he set guys up all alone in the slot. This is the first time really seeing him as he's always been injured. Not sure if he has the size/skating to make the NHL fulltime but he's got some nice vision.

I was interested in watching the Oilers' Maksimov in this game. He is touted as an up and coming sniper. I know he's young but I thought he stood out in a bad way. As in not good.

It was interesting to watch Phillips in person for the first time. Over all I thought he made a statement that he belongs at this level size and all. I was impressed that he had a nose for the net and wasnt afraid to battle for positioning. Where he really accelerated was when there was a race through open ice. A few times he beat the D man with speed, at least one of those times it lead to a primary assist. There is no doubt that he will get some preseason reps, hopefully he can make a strong argument there as well.

I'm sorry, did you just refer to Edmonton as "the promised land"? Is that like a promise of a dire consequence for misbehavior, as in, "If you don't work on you fitness and speed, I promise you that you'll end up getting stuck in Edmonton"?

I really think Dube will be the most successful NHLer who was on the ice for either team yesterday.

I mean, it depends on your perspective. If you can't see how special it is to be a part of what's happening up there, that's on you.

But a perennial pre-season Cup contender and bumping elbows with past and present hockey greats sounds pretty great too.

Yeah, sounds great if your career goal is to be a groupie.

OTOH, I think most prospective first round picks would aspire to actually raise the Cup one day.

Love the sarcasm, BTW.

I didn't really see a whole lot for Edmonton to be excited about.

Bouchard has some nice skills and a good shot, but he's not going to go far in the NHL skating like Bambi an hour after birth. I thought that Bear looked ok in his own end, but he's a guy that's had what a year of pro-hockey, he should have stood out after a year of pro hockey.

I'm still absolutely baffled . . .what? shocked . . . what? godsmacked, that Edmonton for all of their draft picks has so little coming up.

Its equivalent to your parents going on an awesome vacation and bringing you back a one of those, my parents went on a vacation and all they T-shirts, but its two sizes two small and is a horrible puke green color.

Yamamoto was inblisable out there, he showed next to nothing. Edmonton's goaltending was brutal out there.

Overall He's never really wowed me. Maybe I'll be wrong but I don't really see any star potential.

His numbers last year after going back to junior where he started slow ended up good but not great, and he scored less goals than the year before.

Didn't produce in the WHL playoffs or the WJ tourney.

He's trending behind Eberle at the same age by a fair margin.

I think if he makes the NHL, he will end up as a 40-50 point player.
There is real bust potential there though. If he's a 30ish point guy he will be off to Europe because no one has time for a 5'7" 30 point player.
