FYI, there is no "trade freeze" in effect. Teams are free to trade players at any time during the SC playoffs with the proviso that no players moved can participate in the championship tournament.

I think this was the situation at the beginning of last season. It has been repeated over and over since last spring: at the time, the Flames had three primary needs:

· a starting goalie
· a second-pair defenseman
· a scoring rightwinger

They addressed the first two, but were unable to fill the third.

With an added year of development I believe that the situation has presently changed, and would expect the Flames to NOW draw from an even greater strength in their defence core to address their scoring needs. They are better positioned to do so NOW than they were last year.

How is this so difficult to grasp?
Flames had a 2nd pair defense that had just come off a spectacular 2nd half of season run to make the playoffs.

Trading for Hamonic was a minor upgrade at best that came with a huge price tag.

It will be interesting how the rest of the league evaluates the Flames talent by the off season trades.

I was thinking about this earlier. How many trades actually go through during the playoffs? Do we think Mr Bettman has a 'don't distract from my moneymaking with trades' unwritten rule, or do GMs just hold off until everyone has a clearer picture on what's what?

We know that there is no unwritten rule, because NHL transactions do rarely occur during the playoffs. Last year the Stanley Cup playoffs began on 12 April, and then concluded on 11 June. There were three trades made during this time:

· 28 Apr: Carolina Hurricanes acquired G Scott Darling from Chicago Blackhawks for a third-round pick in 2017 Draft
· 9 May: Dallas Stars acquired G Ben Bishop from Los Angeles Kings for a fourth-round pick in 2017 Draft
· 31 May: Los Angels Kings acquired the rights to Bokondji Imama from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a seventh-round pick in 2018 draft

Somehow, Calgary has great defensemen and defensive prospects, and instead they trade 3 picks for another defenseman, and use their remaining cap space for another defenseman, while their prospects toil in the minors.

Makes no freaking sense.
Calgary had great puck moving defensemen and puck moving prospects but had no physical defensive defensemen. There are multiple types of defensemen and we had a surplus of one type and zero of the other type. Not to mention arguably none of our prospects were ready at that point.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Hamonic's perceived value (among some fans) is going to rise significantly when the Flames make the playoffs.

Treliving said today that there are players that are good for getting you into the POs and those that are good in the POs. Although I think he’s underrated on this board, he may also be more of the latter.

Despite the team being poor I thought Hamonic was very solid in the latter half of this season. He's a warrior and exactly what we need more of.

I think with how young he still is we're going to get several rock solid seasons from him to come.
