Let Iggy go out with a hugely bloated career here in Calgary. Why bring him back to be a 3rd or 4th line forward? He truly is hard to play with. How many years did Calgary look for the perfect center for him? Let the man go people.

You realize how hard it is to get a number 1 centre don't you? You realize he carried Conroy and Langkow to 70+pt seasons don't you?
Simply a terrible recollection that he was hard to play with. He got so many players paid thanks to playing with him. Husselius was on waivers to 60+pts. Tangs went from 37pts in Tampa to 69 the next year with Iggy. Brendan Morrison went from a PTO to a 40+ pt season with Iggy.
He is no where near the player he was back in the day. If the Flames keep their play until March and they can bring him in to be a 4th liner for a low cost then why not? I have no problem playing him over Chaisson

Oh good, the vocal pebble is on the case.
Praising the Oil and Russell, while knocking the Hamilton, Iginla's prime Calgary years and accusing the board of following the party line?
Me thinks ye troll too hard.

Do we have to take Tanguay back if Iggy returns? Because I'm not cool with that.

Are you serious? Is this even a question? Of course we'd need to take Tanguay back.
Tanguay will then ask to be traded in the off season once Iginla retires.

Don't forget Cammy's 39 goal season which in turn made him too expensive for us to keep!

Why do we become fans of the game in the first place? Why do teams that are profitable gain such long standing and loyal fanbases in their cities? It's because of things like this. It's not just because of success or stats sheets, otherwise we'd just jump on with whoever is at the top of the league each year. It's because we each have moments and players that hook us, because of good stories that make us feel good to witness. And those players and moments become sentimental for fans, so they stick with that team because of them. And part of it may be because it's your home team and home is also a sentimental thing.
03-04 was special cause it was a really good story and Jarome was a good guy that anyone could get behind and the rest of the team didn't have that pedigree of success. Funny enough despite having similar droughts prior, the 14-15 team didn't capture the city like 03-04 did. A lot of indifferent or even oblivious people on the streets. And if we make it again this season I think it'll be the same thing. Only the old timers or generation Ys that grew up during the 04 run, or the young people that actively pay attention to hockey. But there's a whole new generation of young adults that couldn't tell you about 04 and people that haven't been in the city that long, and for them you need a little something extra/special, a good story to win people over.
Making decisions like this is how you can hook a new generation of fans in the city. I think this an example of that 2% of the time where you step away from the analytics and do something where part of the motivation is the city and the fans, and mainly because it doesn't really hurt the team anyway. It's low risk but high reward, because even people that are impartial to hockey that have lived in this city at least will know the name Iginla and you might just get them to tune in for a game, and that could be all the time you need to get them invested.
I think the new leadership and culture since his leaving are already too well established to worry about it being a distraction. So I dunno... I dunno how you can really say it's something to "stay away" from. Like the previous poster said, if you're firmly on that side maybe you've lost touch with that inner fan or something. I don't know how that wouldn't be awesome for anyone that gives two #### about the team.

Fans care less about winning than they do about feeling good. Key lesson from this thread.

I know it's not a smart decision, but if still be for it. Have the grizzled vet who has rare but timely goals patrolling the 4th line

Iginla can't play anymore. Accept it. We would not be getting back the player he was in 2003-04. We would be getting back a hyper floater who plays a one way game who can't spell defense let alone play it. Worst of all, he can't skate with today's pace and is always behind the play, even with his cherry picking. Iginla is done and would be nothing but a liability when the games mattered.
We're talking about a guy that is a boat anchor on one of the worst teams in the league, and we want to bring that guy back for a period where we are playing the best of the best? That would be a horrible decision. That has Fredrick Modin written all over it.

I didn't know you couldn't have both?
So you think that Iginla would sabotage the team with his 12 minutes a night on line 3/4?
Freddie Hamiilton and Lance Bouma must be leagues better. Truly the difference between winning and losing..can't afford to mess with a good thing.
Also eh..that's life. It's the little things sometimes, ya know? Why we can't let go of some of that crap in our basements. It was the good times. Same thing applies here. I think you can afford to have a 2 month sendoff to a guy that means a lot to a city without messing with the good thing they're building.
Not to say I think it's actually gonna happen. Brad doesn't give a #### about some beloved player that played for the organization long before he got there. Even people romanticizing the idea know full well how realistic it is. Doesn't mean it isn't fun to think about. Why don't you just let the people feel good?

How the #### is this poll slightly in favour of bringing him back? He can't skate in today's game. He cannot keep up, period. The spirit is willing and the legs are done.

Personally I'm pleasantly surprised it isn't a lopsided 'yes'. People tend to be suckers for nostalgia.
I don't really get this kind of nostalgia though. For me, one of the things I like least in sports is watching washed out former stars. It just makes me sad to see how much of their greatness is gone. Yeah if we could get the good Iggy back that would be awesome, but to me that seems completely unrealistic. He has not been a good player for a while, regardless of when exactly did he stop being a good player.
Iggy is not putting up points anymore. He's too slow to bring energy, he doesn't play that physical and he's pretty bad at playing defense. I don't want to see Iggy be useless, especially not as a Flame. I have good memories of Iggy playing here, and I'd like to keep it that way.
(And that's just on top of that cap hit, the media circus and the possibility that we'd actually give up resources for a bad player.)

Brining him back on a one day contract so he can retire as a Flame would be okay with me.

I'm sorry, I have trouble hearing you behind that massive strawman you just built.

I suppose if you are behind a straw man you should have trouble seeing, not hearing.

Pretty much this. Not saying we could get Byron back, but i would rather trade for a player that is going to be a spark plug and fit regularly in the lineup. I just don't see Iggy comming back being as nostalgic as others see. I think at best he would be in and out of pressbox changing maybe with Chiasson? I certainly would not pick Iggy over Bouma, Ferland or Hathaway for bottom 6 use. Truthfully i think Chiasson would beat out Iggy for regular playing time.
