If by some outlandish reverse-miracle the Oilers manage to finish the season ahead of the Flames and in a playoff spot, then I will look forward to their utter annihilation in a seven game series by a vastly superior team.

Right now, the Flames are 3 points up on 9th in the Conference (1.5 wins). Under a 3 point system, the Flames would be 6 points up on 9th (2 wins).

I'm not suggesting that YOU are saying this, but often, the detractors of the "3-Pt regulation win" system use the "it wouldn't make much difference" argument to support sticking with the "loser-point" system. As a proponent of the 3-pt-regulation-win system, I'd argue that the "wouldn't make much of a difference" argument is actually further support in favour of switching to it.
It's completely illogical for the NHL to have some games worth 3 points and others worth 2, and (even further) to not know in advance of the season which of these games will be worth however many points. If there is not much of a difference in the competitive standings, then switching to the 3 pt system makes sense from both the playoff race and the mathematical equivalency perspectives.
Ultimately, I think the NHL retains the current system to prevent the gap between teams from appearing to be so spread out (i.e. consider Vancouver's position relative to the top spot in each scenario outlined in the charts--thanks for posting those btw, getbak!). It the NHL equivalent of Oiler player-progression monitoring: optically, it looks better.
Darren Haynes wrote a good blog post about this recently. Don't know if it's been posted elsewhere, but here it is, for anyone interested: http://www.flamesfrom80feet.ca/2017/...ange-nhls.html

It took 42 games, but the red snake has finally asserted itself above the green snake. In order to stay there, the Flames need to win their next four games in a row. Their opponents are:
at Winnipeg (19-20-3)
vs. San Jose (24-14-2)
vs. New Jersey (16-17-8) NJD's 2nd night of back to back (Edmonton)
at Edmonton (21-13-7) 2nd night of back to back
The red snake is 3.171 points below the black line. If the Flames win the four games shown above, they will be above the black line for the first time since April 11, 2015.

After a one game absence, the red snake continues to rise. It will take Thursday night off to recuperate, and then will look to rise four points' worth with back to back games on Friday and Saturday night. There is the potential for bonus snakes this weekend.

The red snake has dumped the purple snake and is now hanging out with the green snake. Solid trade-up.
Our snake is a social climber
