Seems like a good move given the hole that was going to be on the RW beside Monahan and Gaudreau. After watching a few highlights it looks like 1) He scores most of his goals from the left side inside the circle with a pretty good one-timer and 2) He has played for a ton of teams for a 30 year old.
Given the choice, I would have taken Hudler back on a one year deal over Versteeg. I know Versteeg comes in about $1M cheaper but Hudler had some great chemistry on that line and still put up 46 points despite having a bad season.

Brad said on the fan that they approached his agent to discuss taking him on during the summer and at that point he had already agreed to the PTO with the Oilers, I believe.
Sounds like Edmonton approached him right after being released by his european team and just beat Calgary to the punch.
It's pretty clear he was weighing both options probably throughout camp, knowing the Flames' interest. Perhaps held out on deciding until Gaudreau was under contract and BT could approach him again.

I know Versteeg has friends/family in Calgary also, as he grew up in Lethbridge.
I always heard tales of people in Calgary who grew up with him and ended up going to the Blackhawks Cup celebrations and getting VIP treatment...riding the limos, convincing girls they were Hawks players, etc.

Last time the Flames signed a player in a PTO with a hated rival it turned out really well for our top line. BMo had a solid year playing with Iggy and Tangs with Jarome having a 41 goal 86pt season. Hoping Versteeg has the same impact on our current top line.

Sadly, money well spent to keep Mayray away from this team.

I like this deal. Proven winner and on a 1 year deal. Low risk and high reward possibility.

Renaud Lavoie @Renlavoietva
#flames Kris Versteeg has a no-trade clause in his contract. List of 3 teams he don't want to be traded.

I think every single player in the history of no trade clauses has had Edmonton on their list.

Personally I absolutely hate Versteeg. Came across as arrogant when with the Leafs. Very mediocre player at this stage of his career. Not a fan of this move at all. Who else could have the Flames moved on instead of him I have no idea, but I just don't like the idea of him being in a Flames jersey. Early favorite to be the fan whipping boy I predict.

Wasn't Versteeg one of the Blackhawk players that Friedman said was saying was saying disgusting things to Iginla during the playoffs. Friedman wouldn't even repeat what he was saying because it was so vulgar and he said he has never seen a player take that much verbal abuse on the ice.
