if Penn State wins this game is the Big 10 Championship meaningless? Can Penn State get into the playoff with 2 wins?

thats the big question.
I dont know how you can put a team in the playoffs when they arent even able to win their own division, never mind their conference.
All this will do is expediate the move to 8 teams, which is becoming increasingly clear is a necessity.
of course all this is moot if PSU doesnt get things going here and beat MSU.

Two quick TDs for the Lions and it looks like they are on their way to the Big 10 championship. No chance the Big 10 champion will make the playoffs unless Washington or Clemson loses next week.
Agreed it is tough to put a team in the playoff if they don't win the conference but if only conference championships matter then the early season games are meaningless. An eight team playoff is needed big time. Maybe they could use 4 of the pre-Chirstmas bowl games as quarter finals?

I posted an 8 team proposal a while back (Power 5 conference champions, 2 wild cards, 1 team from the other conferences). This would be a possible playoff:
1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Washington
4. Penn State
5. Oklahoma
6. Ohio State
7. Michigan
8. Western Michigan
Edited as I realised Wisconsin likely wouldn't make it if lost the Big 10 and had 3 losses.

Pretty butt clenching for a while there, but Alabama putting some space on the board now.
Still well within striking distance for Auburn though.

I agree with this...but here is the issue.
Penn State beat OSU, has a very similar schedule other than that OK game, and actually has a chance to win the conference should they win today.
How can anyone justify putting OSU in ahead of them?
Based on what? Rankings again? If so...just do away with the playoff as it has changed absolutely nothing and is but a giant scam.
I dont know, many neanderthals were dragged into a playoff system kicking and screaming saying that it makes regular season games meaningless, which overall is poppycock, but in specific instances quite true.
At any rate...love the chaos myself.

They average 470 yards and 34 points a game, so that's pretty hyperbolic.

Take away their games against Alabama A&M, Arkansas State, and Louisiana Monroe and they avearge 22 pts a game if heard correctly earlier today.
In their last SEC game they had 160 yds of offense...against Georgia.
Today they have 180 with 8 minutes left.
So yes i was a bit hyperbolic but not much. They stink on offense against real teams.

Pretty interesting what will happen for the playoffs. Okla vs OkSt next weekend is a huge game.
I can see at least 3 deserving teams being out of the playoffs.

I already see that we will have 3 undeserving teams in it. As we rush to see how many participation ribbons we can hand out, the most obvious aspect of this season is that we have one team that is clearly the best, and just a mess of decent but not great teams below them. They playoffs is just a waste of time this year. It's odd that the solution to how this year is playing out is we need a bigger playoff field. Not a smaller one.

3 undeserving teams? Seriously? Clemson has earned it, Ohio St has earned it. Only Washington is questionable due to their strength of schedule.
Just because Bama looks unbeatable doesn't mean the playoffs are a waste of time. Said the same thing about a lot of other teams on a lot of other occasions, including the grey cup yesterday.
On a more interesting note, pretty much every article and source I'm reading has OSU with a good shot at making the playoff. Some are saying they are an outright lock and that one of PSU or Washington will be left on the outside looking in.
I don't want to see conference championships made completely irrelevant, but this is the right decision. Penn State is a two loss team who lost by 40 points to Michigan. However if they beat Wisconsin convincingly and Washington barely squeaks by in their championship I would have no problem seeing two B10 teams make it.

I still think there's a decent chance we see Michigan and Ohio State both make the playoff. Rematch would be a TV juggernaut and we know the committee will value TV very importantly in the decision making process. Penn State barely beating Wisconsin would certainly open the door to that possibility.

I'm not sure how they make that work unless they purposefully mess with the rankings though. No way you can put Mich ahead of Clemson, which you'd have to in order to get that rematch.
Although a Bama/Clemson 1/4 game as a rematch of last year's NC and a OSU/Mich 2/3 game rematch would be pretty sweet, I have to admit.

Are they doing NYE games again this year? Considering how bad last year's ratings were, they'll be manipulating the matchups hard if they are. Washington-Alabama sounds like a massive ratings dud, no offense Huskies fans.

Yup. Fiesta and Peach this year.
And I'm traveling on NYE in the afternoon so I am definitely gonna miss one of them.

Here's an interesting question. Given how dreadful the SEC has been this year, should Alabama still make the playoff if it loses to Florida?

They would if they lost. They've set a pretty significant gap between them and the rest, I think they can afford that loss.
