They likely wanted him at a certain price point. And when he went from RFA to UFA, he figured he could get more than the Flames' desired price point. And he was right.
These players need to think about their financial futures because the huge salary could end at a moments notice. I don't blame him for trying to maximize his earnings.

Avs sign Colborne (2 yrs, $2.5 mil AAV)
New Avs forward Joe Colborne feels right at home in Denver
http://www.denverpost.com/2016/08/09...lanche-denver/
Quote:
“It’s honestly just a nicer version of Calgary,” Colborne said of Denver. “It’s warmer and the weather is great. And there’s so much to do. In Calgary, it’s great, but it can get a little slow sometimes. Denver always has something going on.”

Don't think the Arb filing 2 years ago wasn't an affect on the no QO decision.

Joe says Denver is a nicer version of Calgary. Flames fan jokingly/seriously say their newer players are more skilled versions of Colborne. Good luck Joe.

Uhh ya Joe. I am sure you're not talking downtown Denver. That place is absolutely a crappier version of Calgary. I'd love to hear how 16th street mall is so much better than 8th Ave. you know with the gangs of crack heads and thugs roaming the joint at all hours.
I'll give him the party scene maybe better. I have only been there on business but was super unimpressed. Their downtown was more like Edmonton's than Calagry that is for sure.
Good luck Joe, enjoy your time there.

heh. If he had gone from the Avs to the Flames, he'd be telling our media that Calgary is a "nicer version of Denver". Always wise to play to the home crowd.

Yeah I thought that street was sketchy too, but, like anywhere else, just mind your own business and you're fine. Overall, the downtown looks crappier (in some areas, not all) but it's a much more walkable city with more street level activity and culture (especially the west side of downtown, so awesome). Plus, with NHL / NBA / MLB / NFL there along with the mountains, from a sports perspective, there is quite a bit to do there.
I don't hold these kinds of comments against Joe. If that's what he prefers, that's what he prefers. Just because you're from Calgary doesn't mean you have to defend it at every chance.

Still a very bizarre situation. I wonder why he would leave his hometown team and the one organization that gave him a legit chance to be a regular NHLer for a team that rivals the Oilers in terms of sucking at rebuilding? I would have thought if he was willing to sign for those same dollars with the Flames he would have be resigned before qualifying offers were due?
Sounds like the Avs are promising him top 6 minutes which is something the Flames were not going to commit to. Maybe he is happy to get away from the city and while he said all the right things in Calgary he is looking forward to not having friends and family pester him for tickets?
I wish Joe the best but at the end of the day his loss does not feel like it will hurt the Flames at all. Rather give his spot to Shinkaruk, Tkachuk, Porier or another prospect

That is kind of a jerky thing to say. You can say nice things about Denver without comparing to Calgary. I suspect that is more immaturity than anything else. Having lived in both cities I do believe there are many similarities. About the only consensus opinion would be that Denver's weather is preferable. As for which city is better? That is in the eye of the beholder.

I think his GF lives in Denver, so that probably made it a pretty easy decision for him.

Hmm, maybe I don't follow player's comments enough then, because I certainly never see players saying things like this. I usually read the typical hockey player cliché stuff - "It's a great city, really happy to be here" etc. Can't remember the last hockey player to say one city's nicer than the other. They usually avoid anything like that like the plague.

Makes sense why a guy like that would want to move. Some people thrive on pressure and attention others do not. I'm glad he's gone we need difference makers not passengers. Good enough is far from good enough.

Everyone's allowed to voice their opinion. Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut. Obviously nothing terrible was said here but he's taking a clear jab at Calgary. I know what you're doing Joe and I don't like it.
