If so, I sure hope its a change of direction away from the current location and plans.

There hasn't really been a lot of secrecy. For the past few weeks, the rumours have been flying. Anaheim and St. Louis both seemed to make their coaching hires with far fewer leaks than we have had. Not too many people saw the Carlyle or Yeo hires before they happened.
It was leaked that Carlyle was interviewed twice by the Flames and that Gulutzan has been the front runner for a while. If it does end up being him, then it fair to say that it wasn't exactly a secret.

Despite being on a long losing streak the team had still over performed at the time of the extension. Treliving said when the extension happened that none of the players need to second guess who the coach in the room was going to be

Maybe they didn't go that far, but I find it quite easy to believe they disliked Hartley's approach, they expressed their displeasure to Treliving in year-end interviews, and that played a significant part in his decision. In professional sports today, star players are higher up the status ladder than coaches. When stars don't buy into what a coach is selling or they get tired of his approach, it's the coach who goes. That's just reality.

IMO the coach and GM weren't on the same page on more than a few things this season and while the players opinions may have played a small part I think the bottom line is that Treliving and Hartley simply had differing opinions of how the team should play and what players should play which ultimately left no choice for the GM but to fire a coach that just a season before did an admirable job of getting a young roster to overachieve.

I'm pretty vexed about this. That two players under 22 who have both seen incredible growth under a coach would really have much bad to say about him.
If anything was mentioned by those players it was likely in response to a questions centered around "what do you think of the way we play?"

Sorry if this has been answered, but if we get this guy from Van... Do we have to give up a pick?

No. They both are gingers, that is about it. GG understands players, systems, the game of hockey and how it is played. Gilbert gets none of those. God I really despise that guy.

I'm now on board with Gulutzan, if he is indeed the hiring.
It is time this organization gets GG right. Coates was well ahead of his time by hiring a red headed coach with the initials of GG.

So I listened to the Fan on Monday, when Treliving basically said, they have their man. I know things can take time to come together, but count me surprised we haven't seen an announcement or press conference yet.
So, does that make anyone else wonder if they landed on their man, but then their man chose someone else?

I think this may be partially the case. I think the initial plan was Gulutzan as HC with Carlyle as his Associate, I think now they are working out who an associate may be.

Could be, but as much as everyone on here hates Carlyle, I doubt he takes an associate gig, and likely didn't need to, even if Anahiem didn't come calling.
I'm guessing Carlyle was their man, and Anahiem swooped in at the last minute.

No way was Carlyle their man - they had all kinds of time to sign him if they had wanted to.
And I agree that Carlyle wouldn't agree to an associate job.
I think this is just taking some time to get the details sorted out. No need to always try and create unlikely scenarios.
