I know they were around, but what I mean by prospect is that they hadn't developed into guys who you could feel fairly confident about yet. Right now I can say with a fair degree of confidence that Culkin and Kulak have decent shots at the NHL.
Further, of the guys I mentioned, Andersson and Kylington are the most promising IMO. Andersson impressed a lot in camp and Kylington has done well as a minor leaguer in his first year.

If one of the "Truculent Whipping Boys" gets moved, it's more likely to be Bollig as Engelland is a much more useful player. He is a solid number 6 defenseman who can also play the wing as he did for the Penguins. He is also a better fighter than Bollig.
I don't think Engelland is going anywhere, as much as some of you might want him to.
Bollig, Wideman, and Smid will all get moved before Engelland unless someone offers up a quality asset for him.

Out of all the "bad" contracts the Flames have, Engelland is the least of my worries.
Yes he is overpaid but his cap hit isn't that terrible and it will be gone after next year. At least he is a serviceable player on the bottom pairing that brings toughness and leadership. If your worst cap hit is Engelland @ 2.9 for 1 more year it is not that bad.
The contracts that bug me the most are Smid, Wideman, Raymond, Stajan as they are all signed a year too long and 2 of these guys are scratched most of the time. It will be nice once these contracts come off the books.
Having Smid (3.5), Raymond (3.15) and their combined 6.65 mill in the press box most nights really sucks. That 6.65 million could be the equivalent of Johnny's new deal next year.

Every deadline is different. People like Elliott Friedman have said repeatedly that teams are very reluctant to bring on players with term beyond this season.
Given the projected cap for next season and the cap situation of most teams that makes sense.
Trading away bad contracts with term without taking back an equally bad contract is unlikely. Anything is possible, but I wouldn't expect to see Engelland, Smid, Raymond, Wideman, etc moved for picks and prospects at th deadline.

What I said was that they signed Engelland because he's a great leader/off-ice guy. I meant after this contract is up, Engelland could be a great fit for our farm team on an AHL deal.

russell is not good, he is not good on a second pairing, he should not be resigned unless smid and englland are moved and he is resigned for 2 million and limited to 14 mins a game. hartley is miss managing the roster so badly it hurts.

Is there an echo in here??? Almost the same post in 2 threads.
Seriously dude, Russell, Wideman and Brodie helped to get this team into the playoffs last year when Gio got hurt.

Russell isn't bad. Russell isn't bad on the 2nd pairing. I'd take him at 3 million.
Which defensemen exactly should be playing 2nd pairing? Wideman is playing twice as bad as Russell.
I don't expect any sort of serious reply from you so you may just go straight on ignore if I don't see some improvement from you.

cut him some slack on this one. Mods locked his thread and asked him to move it to here.
I do not have a problem with Russell.

I liked Russell all last year. This year I notice him getting trapped more and more. I felt the first goal by NJ was largely on him. I only saw the first tonight and listened to the rest, but he was stuck a lot again.

You can only walk away from an arbitration ruling if the cap hit is over $3.5 million.

Russell is bad. Russell is bad on the 2nd pairing. If the Flames take him at 3 million, they run the risk of not having the future flexibility to keep the core. Jeez, how many years do you think Russell wants? Can you seriously stomach having to watch him for another three to four years?
Which defensemen should be playing in the 2nd pairing? That's a good question.
Consider this:
Guess who the player on the right is.

It's former Flame and waiver-wire shoot-out superstar David Schlemko. The ol' Schlemkat is having a great year and is making $625,000 doing it.
The point is that there are players out there that can improve the Flames defensive on-ice performance for much less money and term.

this is why I do not want us re signing Russel. We can definitely replace him internally

How does the guy who replaced Schlemko on the roster match up with Schlemko? That would be Hamilton.

Well no, they tried to bring shlemko back but couldn't because they needed to move one of Wideman or Russell. Hamilton was brought in to replace those guys on the second pair, Schlemko was always meant to be a third pairing guy.
Sorry....

What I am most interested to know is what the RGI looks like for our defensive corps.
