There is no such thing as a perfect crlme, just a question of how well you cover your tracks vs. how dedicated and competent the investigator is.

In this case, and somewhat ironically, the BitTorrent server used to initially seed the files was itself left completely unprotected and someone got in:

http://arstechnica.com/security/2015...investigators/

Not much at this point, but enough to give investigators a start.

Also, and interestingly, Toronto Police are trying to crowdsource the investigation, hoping other hackers can provide clues about the perpetrators of this one. Not a bad idea, really. At worst, they are no further ahead. At best, maybe some other hackers were AM members and none too pleased about being exposed...

Thats hilarious!

"Give us BitCoins or we'll tell your wife you were on an internet website!!!"

Um. I have no idea what those are. Do you take cash?

"No! Only BitCoins!!"

Well, I dont know what those are, have any of them or know how to get them. Cash?

"Only BITCOIN!!"

Alright then man, have a good one.

Worst. Blackmail. Ever.

I'm just wondering, if they can figure out who did this, whether there are several seven-or-eight-figure lawsuits headed at them in addition to whatever criminal charges would be in the offing.

There would likely be a bullet heading at them.

Surely in this day and age they could track these hackers down and if people keep committing suicide and continue getting extorted then it's possible the investigation may be ramped up. It's possible these hackers are getting into this over their heads.

Saw on the news feed in the elevator that AM is offering $500,000 for any info leading to the arrest of the hackers. Didn't see that in this thread unless it's in an article.

I hope so. For years the attitude of internet justice has been anywhere from "It's hilarious when people's lives are ruined by the internet, they shouldn't have been doing anything wrong if they didn't want this, hahahahaha!!!!!" (hell you can even see reactions like that in this thread) to "Yeah, it's bad, but you can't really do anything about it".

I can't wait until laws/law enforcement catches up with online criminals to the point where you read about them just like any real life crime committed.

"Last week a man was gunned down in the NE, and today police laid a 2nd degree murder charge against so and so"

"Last week online hackers committed a huge crime resulting in 4 deaths, and the release of personal information, today 5 men were charged with X, and will likely spend decades in prison".

right now it seems as though hackers don't really face any kind of law because it's so hard to catch them. I'm willing to bet that as soon as an example is made to a hacker who was caught, you'll see less crimes like this happening.

No, it is a bad approach. Not everyone in this world thinks and acts like hackers would, especially when it comes to security and traceable details. Blackmailers expecting average joes to know anything about Bitcoins and the way they work is completely stupid.

I'm in the tech industry, and expectations like that NEVER, EVER work.

Added bonus: most of the people who fall for that scam would buy their bitcoin from a site set up to steal credit card data. So while maybe one victim of this blackmailing in a hundred might pay up, the blackmailers will get a lot more than just a bitcoin.

Doesnt it take forever though?

"Sure, I'll get that for you in about two and a half years..."

Just to further my point, and this absolutely isn't meant to single someone out for the hell of it, but this was a very typical reaction when the story broke and to be honest a very typical response to most internet justice cases.

So my question would be to Roast Beef; Now that you've seen the fallout that you stated would be hilarious, which now includes widespread destruction to families, including innocent kids right up to suicides.

Do you still stand by your initial comment that the fallout would be hilarious, or has your opinion changed now to the more appropriate "This was a crime committed by criminals?".

And I guess my point is I'd like to see society start to react differently to SJW/internet justice cases, because right now I believe we tend to react like children rather than adults. We're experienced enough in the damage and destruction of internet justice now to understand the consequences.

Is it a lack of empathy in people or we just don't care, or we believe we're perfect and so every little thing that happens to anyone who isn't perfect is hilarious and awesome because they deserve it? I'm at a loss, what will it take?

Can the hackers be added as Defendants too?

No maybe not, but it's not like this is some small-time thing. Law enforcement is throwing more at this than any other tech case I can think of.

What's better? Getting some extortion money from a handful of people that know what bitcoins are and increasing your chances of getting away with it?

Or getting extortion money from a ton of people that gets you caught in a month?

The class representative is a widower who joined up after he lost his wife to cancer... welp, there's a sympathetic choice.

Why would that guy even join this site? Why not a normal dating site, unless he was specifically interested in meeting a married woman?

First divorce lawyers cleaning off their desks for a flood of new clients, now high end suit lawyers licking their lips.

Will this be the single most profitable news story for blood suckers in history?

Because Ashley Madison has people with overt sexual desires, moreso than other sites. In fact it's probably better since it's more sexually-oriented than other sites.

Not hard to understand. .
