Am I the only one who doesn't believe in TSN's "sources say" one bit when it comes to Treliving?
Treliving is tighter than a frogs arse and he insists on every player and their agent not to say a word...Gio's camp may have asked for 9m but I don't believe for a minute it was leaked to TSN.

Gio knows his own injury history. He also knows the past 2 seasons he just had.
Easily he could blow out a knee in game 5 next season, and UFA means nothing.
Easily the Flames could play him 22min a night on the 2nd pair, reduce pp time next season, and visually it might look like he is regressing statistically.
Going into the last week of July, Gio had all the power. From here Forward, the Flames do. Trust me. He signs 5yrs 7.5M AAV.

Anything above 7 million would be an unbelievable payday for a guy who has had a real good 120 some game stretch and before that would never have been considered in the top 30 dmen in the league. Almost unfathomable and some would say reckless. 7.5 puts him in the Suter, Weber, Subban category and every single NHL GM would take those three over Gio next year let alone 5 years from now.

I disagree with your assertion Mr. Gravy. Giordano has progressed slower than others, but he stands higher than many others. Maybe you watch hockey, but you don't see?

I don't think anything gets done for the next few weeks. Treliving will be working hard on the UFA market, and re-signing the RFAs he just qualified.
Hope he does end up re-signing in the 6.5-7.5 range. This allows the Flames to place an artificial cap on the rest of the team for the next few years with Monahan, Gaudreau and Bennett, and will allow the Flames to 'build a winner' by having additional cap room to bring in other impact players and to keep other existing ones happier (i.e. Bouma on his next contract if his scoring keeps repeating itself, Ferland if he starts finding the back of the net regularly which he probably will, etc).
7.5 million won't put him in the Weber, Suter and Subban category. The first two are making way more money than that with their heavily front-loaded, long term cap circumventing contracts. Subban's contract didn't have the relative luxury of being able to a cap-circumvention, so his cap hit is 9 million (8 years, 72 million IIRC).
These new contracts for 'star players' are going to be very interesting moving forward. The dollar amount is going to get substantially larger vs years past due to CBA plugging holes into cap circumvention. You just can't compare Giordano's money to Weber's and Suter's.
I am still hoping for a deal around ~7 million AAV, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest that he gets something close to Subban. Who here will argue that Subban is a better player than Giordano is right now? Of course Giordano's age will (or at least, SHOULD) impact the term he ends up signing, but he 100% belongs in Subban's level. Some would argue he should be a little higher, given his all-round play and leadership.
My thoughts is that wishing for 6.5 is a pipe-dream, but he won't be signing 9 million either. 7.5 should be his AAV, and hopefully his term is not longer than 5 years. Hoping for a sweetheart 3 year deal (but that is definitely a pipe-dream as well).
However, if he signs at 7.5, there will be a massive round of "OMG, he is making Weber/Suter/etc" type of money, when in reality, he will be making far from it. I just don't see how you can compare contracts in today's market with those that managed to circumvent the cap. Heck, didn't Weber (and Suter, and Parise, and a few other notable players) make 22 million or so in 366 days?

If it's not close to 37.5m/5yr, then it's 32M/4yr.

They will sign Gio and he will lead us to a cup, possibly multiple cups over the next five years. It will go down as one of the great good guy stories in league history. All of CP, Calgary and Canada will rejoice and I will go on a ridiculous celebratory bender that my wife will not approve of but will understand.

Love Gio, but that is kind of absurd, even for a starting point. $9M per year for 8 years? Nuts.

Love Gio but unless you can lower both the term and cap you walk away from that kind of contract. Paying a 40 year old $9 million will cripple your team.

As much as I love Gio, I trade him before I give him that contract.

Normally I would take such reports with a grain of salt, but knowing the agent involved, would not be surprised.

I'd rather see Giordano traded than have to pay him 9M for 8 years.

If the numbers are true, I hope Treliving sends Giordano on his way.
Love the guy but that's just way way too much and way too long for an oft injured guy who has really only shown 2 or 3 good seasons.
Plus, it will wreak havoc with the team budget in a few years.
Makes no sense at all.

Good luck finding any GM willing to give $9m for 8 years to a 33 year old with a history of injuries. Obviously the price will have to come down somewhat, but if that is even at all in the ballpark of what they are looking for on a final figure, I'd be working the phones.

Winters camp leaking this info will also greatly annoy Treliving. I hate to say it, but I can see this whole thing going sideways.

remember guys...this is only alleged and even if true, is only an opening number. Nothing to suggest that Treliving and company will succumb to such requests.
I still think he comes in at 5 years and around 8 mil per...which is both fair and tolerable.
