they just showed this on CBC intermission. they all agreed it was an emotional conference and Murray was focused on the process and not the result which is Eichel. They showed an old interview where he ranted and raved about Eichel. Buffalo needs to call him up and smooth things over. It wasn't personal but a GM cannot alienate a future franchise player

4 out of 6 years...that's quite an accomplishment. No one has perfected being terrible like the Oilers.

Their draft lottery winning is unsustainable. I see a big drop off coming.

The Oilers are going to run into the Penguins problem. They might have a couple of high end players but no depth.

Oh yeah, I was upset at the exact time Edmonton won but am already over it and excited for Eichel. There is not an enormous drop off between the two, if any at all. Eichel just became the second freshman ever to win the Hobey Baker.
This isn't a Crosby -> Ryan level of drop.

"Huh? Oh, Yeah, whether it's the Oilers or......maybe another team, it'll be good".

Well this sucks, but screw it. Our guys are doing things the right way, and in the end we'll be rewarded for it. The experience we're getting right now will serve us right for years to come. We now know what it really takes to make the playoffs, and we're learning what it takes to compete in them. Edmonton doesn't. Edmonton's core is their problem. What I see happening is all the weight that needs to be shouldered by the entire team is going to be put on McDavid. He's going to be expected to turn things around single handed, and that's too much to put on an 18 year old. Long term this might be the worst thing to happen to the franchise. I'm excited to see him fail, and that hurts to say because he's a good hockey player, and should be going to a team who can develop him properly. I actually think this could go really bad for Edmonton, it's just unfortunate they'll drag McDavid along.

The oilers fan I was golfin with today acted like they won the Stanley cup when he heard this. He did say though, that now they can dump, hall, and maybe a few others, which was a good point.

I don't know about you guys, but I won't be the least bit surprised when the Oilers get the #1 pick next year. They're still junk.

I'm glad Arizona didn't get it. Don't need to validate a franchise that needs a new address. Edmonton makes me angrier for obvious reasons - but yah, any other team I would have been relatively happy with (meaning, "oh, good for them, anyway ...")

From everything I've read, if Conner McDavid wasn't in this draft everyone would be talking about how special it would be to draft Eichel. He'd likely be one of the better #1 picks available in the last ten years, but just happens to going the same year as a close to, if not generational talent in McDavid.

One point if not already mentioned- the only real consolation for Flames fans if we somehow missed the playoffs this year was entry into the McDavid derby. Had we missed, we can now see that it took Oil Tank level bad to win the lottery and we weren't going to have that. There would have been no silver lining whatsoever to missing the playoffs.
Point being: be glad we made it and enjoy the upcoming week!

This will be 7 straight top-10 picks, and 8 top-10s in the last 9 drafts.
5 top-3 picks in the last 6 years.
What a disgrace to the league.
