Is it possible to be fired just for being a moron? "It's ####ing amazing" and "I respect it"?
That little twerp didn't even have the balls to say it himself and he still gets his dumb ass fired for trying to "defend" this idiotic prank.
Have a nice life ya loser.

That's a private message. The person who received the message screencapped it and put out there.
I don't know if you can fire someone for something they say in a private conversation outside of work. It's not like she said it on TV.
Hopefully they found another reason to fire her.
I do love the Sun's faux outrage. "Oh my gawd, someone said someone stupid and/or racist!".

Wow, now that his name is out there, he's pretty much screwed. Any company he applies with will google his name and most likely won't hire him now. Not to condone what he did, as he is obviously a terrible person, but I'm not sure how someone comes back from something like this, other than by changing their name and moving. Even if he wants to legitimately turn over a new leaf and be a better person, it probably won't matter for a good, long while, if ever. And I'm not sure that's right. It's probably moot however, as this is more likely to leave him bitter, hateful and angry than anything.

I'm torn on this one. I believe there have to be consequences for the crap said in the video, but I also think the guy losing his job over what he said in the video is very harsh punishment, although I understand why it was done. Once the video went out there the lynch mob mentality had everything that was available dug up on the guy and with his employer exposed, the bad publicity came with it and Hydro One doesn't need that.
However, it appears the lynch mob also said someone was involved when they were not. Meaning someone not involved in any way shape or form had their name dragged through the mud unnecessarily.
This whole situation really underlines how you really need to be careful of what you say in public, or on social media, as what you say could reach more of an audience than you intend it to.

I think Hydro One doesn't have a prayer at terminating employment with cause, regardless of what their statement says. They'll have to package him out.
That said, Phoenix is right, this guy's name is out there and any prospective employer will google his name and see this. He could be really screwed over this.

it's easy to say the guys an idiot and that he deserved whatever he had coming, but at the same time, it's also important to realize folks make stupid mistakes that they should definitely be held accountable for, but shouldn't have to suffer for the remainder of their life for. if it takes this guy a year or 2 to finally find employment, due to a dumbass move done likely under the influence, is it fair?
I actually think it isn't. That being said, maybe this is the new age of justice. Everything you do is likely being tracked or caught through video, etc, and can be exposed to the world's social networks and travel like wild fire.
Hopefully that becomes an even bigger reminder and incentive to behave yourself, and the world becomes a better world for it?

I'm wary of social media justice, but I find it hard to feel bad for these idiots. I've managed to go my whole life without shouting obscene comments at women trying to do their jobs. Not sure why this whole FHRITP thing caught fire in the first place in this era of cell phone cameras and public shaming.
People were generally much more civil in public 30 years ago. Why has incivility increased at a time when bad public behaviour is easier to be caught and punished for? Frankly, if this kind of heavy-handed punishment is what's required to try to turn back the tide of people being d-bags in public, then I'm all for it. Maybe people should be careful about what they say in public. If we can't make people empathetic, then at least make them wary.

Hard to say without seeing his employment agreement as many employment agreements for salaried positions include codes of conduct for behavior outside of the office. I know in my job, I am always supposed to representing the company I work for. Plus, if he is a registered professional like P.Eng (which I think he must be to be making that much money), he agreed to certain ethics principles.
I would imagine that the PEO is looking into kicking him out as well.

Do people even know what FHRITP means? I wonder if people are just spewing it out without even knowing what it means, thinking, they are being awesome and just doing some juvenile photobombing without being aware of the message behind the acronym. Just playing devils advocate. I can't imagine anybody saying that and thinking it's awesome or cool.

I really do feel sorry for female reporters that are putting up with this. Journalism, especially sports journalism, can be tough for a woman to get a fair shake already. Being humiliated like that constantly can really affect their careers. Just imagine if it was your wife, sister, daughter, etc... and you saw their hard work being nullified like that. It's soul crushing.
I heard the reporter on the radio today, and she said that her boss gave her the option of not reporting at the game because of this issue, but she felt it could hurt her career not to report.
They also had some meatheads calling into the radio. One guy in particular saying that Canadian soldiers died in wars so that we can have freedom of speech. I can't believe how ignorant some people are on that issue.

What? They don't shout out the acronym, haha. You think these people are walking up to reporters and literally yelling out "F H R I T P!!!!!!"?

To be perfectly honest, I don't understand it either... If you simply say "F her", it's assumed you're going to do it "RITP". If you were going to F her somewhere else, that's when you need to specify.
Also, why "right" ITP? Is the alternative "sort of" ITP?
Very odd.

Until this story broke, I had no idea this is happening regularly to live sports coverage. What is wrong with people?

Can you imagine what the soldiers who stormed the beaches at Normandy would do to some guy who yelled that at one of their sisters?

http://www.panmacmillan.com/book/jon...publiclyshamed
For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us - people who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work. Once their transgression is revealed, collective outrage circles with the force of a hurricane and the next thing they know they're being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered at, demonized, sometimes even fired from their job.
A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? We are mercilessly finding people's faults. We are defining the boundaries of normality by ruining the lives of those outside it. We are using shame as a form of social control.
Simultaneously powerful and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be, So You've Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws - and the very scary part we all play in it.

That's actually another pet peeve. "Soldiers died in wars to protect your freedom to X". Well, no, I mean, I don't think that was the reason. I don't think for example that I have freedom of speech in Canada because some legendary war heroes took Vimy Ridge.

This will be a good test case to see exactly how far a company can enforce a code of conduct outside of the workplace. I'm of the opinion that a CoC applies only in the workplace or when you're directly representing your employer.
If you want it to apply all the time, employment and private life, a lot of people better stop doing a lot of stuff since it would violate their agreements.

What do you mean "how far a company can enforce" it? A company can fire a worker because they wore a blue shirt last Tuesday. Of course they can enforce a code of conduct outside the workplace.
