Those deals wouldn't have been too bad if AA was going to go all in and really make a push to win it all. But if you still have holes and are unwilling to open your wallet to fill them there's no point in making blockbuster deals. If you're going for it.............then go for it.

I'm far from an AA apologist, but issues with the budget the team was given fall squarely on the laps of Rogers brass. If you can fault AA for anything, it's in how he chose to allocate those funds. If we think paying Buerhle $20 million hurts now, just wait until they're paying Reyes $22 million in 2017.
I'm trying to hold out hope that the rotation simply can't be as bad as they have been to start the season. I mean this would almost be historically bad if things stayed this way.

The rotation should come around as the majority of the pitchers are below replacement level.
I agree that AA has somewhat been handcuffed by ownership but the Blue Jays are tenth in the MLB in payroll and thats starting Sanchez/Estrada/Norris and having a patchwork outfield, its money not well spent at all. The rest of the division has made the playoffs in the last five years with T Bay and Baltimore having smaller payrolls.
I think all of us can agree that all we want is an effing playoff berth, like come on, it has been long enough.

And to top it all off the damn Astros, Twins, Cubs and Mets are all playing well. Is there no justice anymore. I know it's early but the baseball gods hate the Jays.

I have no trouble with the team budget. Rogers has given him 125 million and this is the team AA has.

No baseball gods, AA has no clue. Cubs have Epstein who is building properly.

I agree with you both and suppose I should clarify. I'm taking issue with the argument that AA has any control over the budget he's given (unless I'm misunderstanding the point KFF is bringing up which is entirely possible). My point, like those you both have made, is that AA has mis-spent the budget he's been given.
All I want is to see playoff baseball as well - I have had a standing agreement with my wife for some time that I can go to Toronto to see the first playoff games without question - thought I'd be doing it last year, but no. This year isn't looking great right now but at least they're not the Brewers (or in their division).

Sorry, my post was probably a bit vague. I agree AA only has so much to work with. But I've seen at least a couple interviews where AA was asked about Rogers and the budget. He mentioned he does indeed have a set budget, but if they were a piece or two away he would feel comfortable going to ownership and asking to bump the budget up to help put the team over the top.
So after making that monster trade with the Marlins and everyone still realizing they still had holes there's a few possibilities:
- AA didn't think they needed to make more moves/spend money. Maybe he thought he could make more moves and move salary out to help free up cash.
- AA asked ownership for some extra cash but was turned down.
- AA realized they needed help but didn't ask ownership for extra funds.
Either way, everyone knows/knew that the team could be a playoff contender at best, but still had holes. Which brings me back to my original comment. If you're going for.......then go for it. Don't make a monster deal and then just sit back and hope for the best with a mediocre pitching staff. Would be different if this franchise made the playoffs once in a while, but the playoff futility is ridiculous. Throw the fans a bone.

Estrada can't go more than 5 innings. Francis comes in and craps the bed. Ergh

This is why they need to nuke the team. Nothing but garbage in the upper end of the organization except Donaldson, Travis and Martin.
