To say that Bennett hasn't earned his spot over most of the current roster is simply not true. He has earned his spot.
If you were to have an accident at work, take time off, recover and return, would you be expected to prove your worth to your employer again?

By your count, Bennett was likely slotted ahead of Mr. Gaudreau at the start of the year when apparently Bennett hands down made this club (I'm going to continue on pretending that your assertion here is indeed as irrefutable as you suggest it is). And at the start of the year Gaudreau was likely the closest player to heading down to the farm, and nothing has changed since then.
So by your logic, I'm going to assume expect Johnny Hockey to be sat in place of Bennett because after all, Johnny was just keeping his spot warm for him right, the spot Bennett earned right? And it's not like we should be accounting for anything that happened since training camp right, cause after all none of that would be meaningful or fair to do given Bennett hurt himself on the job.
So we are done here I guess, Johnny out Sam in?

Only option is to sit Johnny, 100% correct, and not even slightly obtuse.
I stated he was one of the best players in camp, and without injury would have dressed for us in October for his 9.
Flames are playing it slow with Bennett, so be it, no where did I suggest he should take first line minutes or pp time now in April. I just take issue with people claiming he hasn't somehow earned it.
<dur> I personally think Bennett is likely overrated, and we should ride Mason Raymond to the promised land. </dur>

It could be a good psychological feint to wait to use Sam against the Jets on the final game of the season.
Picture this: season on the line, winner gets the final Wild Card spot. Bob Hartley holds a press conference to state that Sam Bennett, 4th overall pick and budding superstar, is going to make his debut vs. the Jets. TSN, SN & all other media outlets run hours of extensive highlights featuring Sam bowling over OHL defensemen & toe-dragging heaps of goals. Winnipeg's coaching staff focuses a huge amount of attention on Sam & how to deal with him, allowing Gaudreau & Monahan to dominate & lead us past the Jets to the playoffs.
Either that or just play him against the Yotes because they're ####.

I'm betting we see him against WPG or LA.. or even both. Those games are so important that leaving out Bennett who can provide dynamic offense outside the 1st line would be not smart. He would not have been recalled if the Flames didn't feel he wouldn't contribute.

Now that Ramo is out, my guess is that Flames will dress Bennett as back-up goalie. So they won't have to sit anyone in favor of Bennett and the epic debate of "earning the spot" will be over. Then Bennett will drop his pads and other goalie's equipment on the bench and jump into the action!

If we're going to play him, I'd prefer to see him start against the Coyotes. He can get rid of the first game jitters against a team we should beat easily.

Does anyone really think our seasons success is due to the likes of Raymond, Colborne, Bollig, Shore, Granlund, Ferland, etc?
It is in spite of those guys that we are succeeding, any chance to upgrade over them with Bennett should be taken.
Even if you want to shelter him on 4th line and play him on 2nd PP, I think it would be an improvement.
And those worrying about playing him on 4th line...why? Our 3-4 lines have been kind of interchangeable...

Actually I think the success is due in part to the ability to throw those players, all of whom are capable NHlers, into the mix at any given time.

Need to start him against PHX so that we can see what he brings. I wouldn't want him to play his first game against LA or in the playoffs. This is a perfect game to test him out.

Given that Hartley will have last change tomorrow night I bet Sam draws in. Jokes aside, you can't shelter Bennett the same way on the road, even it was against the oil.

Looking forward to practice updates and interviews today. If Sam has a strong practice I think he draws in.
Makes more sense than Saturday. He gets a practice and 2 morning skates in with the team, gets to debut on home ice where Hartley has more control of the matchups, and still starts his career against a weaker team so not throwing him directly to the wolves.

Who on the Oilers would Hartley have needed to shelter Bennett from? Justin Schultz?

Agreed. If they don't play him tonight then why did they bother calling him up at all?

Because it didn't use their last non emergency call up.
Because injuries can still happen, and he will be ready.
So that he is part of everything that goes with everything being on the line this time of year.
Because they will need him in the playoffs.
Because he is a huge part of their future

So all of that is important but you have the opportunity to sit some useless players and give him some playing time and you decide against it?

Because if they had sent him to the AHL, he wouldn't have been available for the flames unless in emergency situations. This way they have more options, especially if a player starts really struggling but doesn't constitute an emergency call up. Doesn't mean they automatically hand him a spot in the lineup in the most important games the flames have played in years. Of course, he may prove that he's a better option in practice, but he certainly wasn't guaranteed a spot in the lineup as soon as he was called.

We have no idea if Bennett is going to be better than Raymond in his first NHL game. We know what we have with the current players, plus they've exceeded expectations as a group all year. It's pretty risky to put a rookie in his first game #80 in a heated playoff race.
Not saying I wouldn't do it tho.
