I wonder how many of those critics were hand picked shills, selected for the preview to drive up the rating? I'll hold judgement until we get a broader release, but i'm not confident based on what i've seen and heard thus far.

Sitting at 76% on RT with the summary:
Quote:
Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy -- even if it can't help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original.

- The movie of the summer.
- Fun oozes from almost every frame; likewise the energy of a team excited to be revolutionising the blockbuster landscape.
- Here's a summer movie starring a girl squad proud of its big brains and tacky jumpsuits. You could call that a supernatural event in itself.
Seems legit.

The RT % score is based on ratio of positive/negative reviews if memory serves. The average rating on that website is pretty much as expected (6.6). The Metacritic and IMDB ratings back this second number currently (63/100 and 6/10 respectively).
Edit - Though I think I'd wait until the dust settles. Emotions seem to be running quite high for viewers based on the controversy surrounding the film and it might be impacting the scores (either positively or negatively). So maybe letting those two sides quiet down before making a call based on online reviews might be worth the time.

Sounds like some critics are scared of the claims of misogyny wave that hit others.

I was expecting bad reviews but see good reviews. So confusing!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria, Ghostbusters 2016 getting good reviews...

76% on RT, 4.8 on IMDB. So going aboiut how you'd expect so far. Mostly I want this movie to fail because if it doesn't we're probably getting a Ferris Bueller remake, a Breakfast Club remake and maybe a Howard the Duck remake (which frankly isn't a bad idea given the original...). We should all root for movies that are seriously lacking in creativity or originality to fail, because succeeding is a green light to even less creativity. I'd maybe like to see a moratorium on remakes until at least 50 years after the original. I'm guessing no one would care as much if this was remade in 2034 instead of now. It's just lazy really.

Have you seen the GOTG post credits scene? We are definitely getting a Howard the Duck remake at some point.
I think we have already passed the point of no return. Remakes and sequels make lots of money while originals rarely do.

A gif that was referenced in that guy's review. I will likely only watch this if on a plane.

I'm torn, I love the original Ghostbusters so I don't want this to be a horrible movie. I just can't see it being good unfortunately.
I'll probably watch it when it's free on Shaw, but I won't go out of my way to.
The GIF looks like some good special effects though.

The best spiritual Ghostbusters 3 is basically the videogame from a few years back. It's actually written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis and the entire original cast voices their characters so it's pretty amazing. They capture the spirit (har har) entirely. When you think about the relationship between Ramis and Bill Murray, it's even more remarkable that it was probably the first time and last time since Groundhog Day that Murray performed anything that Ramis wrote.
They know how to play the script straight but just have the characters interacting and reacting to the absurd situations. That's the key to Ghostbusters. It sounds like Feig had no idea what he was doing and wrote the new film like an SNL skit or total farce where everything is treated like bad comedy.

Looking at the reviews, it doesn't look like a lot of the majors have chimed in yet. The top critics so far are pretty much evenly split.

I agree, the game was well done. It bothers me greatly that they spent all those years fighting to convince Murray to make Ghostbusters 3 only for him and the rest of the original cast to show up in this new movie not even playing their own characters. Thanks Bill.

What really burns me is that Bill Murray held out of it because he didnt think another sequel would do it justice.
"It was good, leave it alone and move on."
So instead they moved on without him and shat all over the material, which is exactly what Murray wanted to avoid/prevent.

Except they didn't. He's in the movie (some cameo role). That's what bugs me.

I'm surprised anyone thinks this is a big deal from both sides. We are currently in the middle of the biggest nostalgia crap-fest in the history of human culture. Were people upset when JJ Abrams remade Star Wars with a lady Luke?
Who cares.

It's a sacred franchise. This the the equivalent of the prequels but for Ghostbusters except they replaced the 4 Ghostbusters with 4 Jar Jar Binks. JJ is the one who tried to bring it back to the original spirit.

Some people were, and a black guy, but they're mostly Ukrainians and Russians, most of Eastern Europe really. So they dont really count.
Also he did it well. I dont think there was a single 'dick-joke' in Star Wars.
