The AHL just announced that Gillies and Petricki have been suspended for one game (for instigating in the final 5 minutes of the game).

Apparently there will be further review of the incident.

yup, that's an automatic suspension for instigating a fight. Has nothing to do with the Carrier incident and I imagine they'll hand out a much longer suspension for that. At least that's what I'm hoping.

I like the idea of trying Knight out on the right wing. At least he's an actual right shooting player. Outside of defense, RW is the weakest position in the organization and center has become one of the deepest.

The only thing is, he's one of the best faceoff guys in the organization as well...

Gillies statement:

I would like to apologize to my family back home for embarrassing the family name. To my teammates and the organization and the fans in the hockey community. I crossed the line. Thankfully the kid is okay. I'm not taking this lightly or easily and promise it won't happen again. If you want to bash me I get it. I will just take my medicine with no response. Again I'm truly sorry Gillies

Boy, the kids on the farm sure are kicking in the door to get back up to the big club. What an awful, awful start. Outscored 11–2 in two games. Ortio has a sparkling 5.50GAA

Sorry, this wasn't 'fighting'. This has absolutely nothing to do with a 'fighting' thread. This was a pure goon move, and I am sure even the most ardent critic of fighting doesn't require someone to explain the differences here.

When one guy is not fighting (has his gloves on) but yet is getting blasted by punches (embarrassing enough) and then gets his head picked up and drilled into the ice, it was NOT a fight, and it was a clear move to try and outright injure someone. This is my definition of a goon, and a great example of it. Show me an instance of McGrattan or any other respected fighter or enforcer who does this? Heck, McGrattan usually hangs onto his opponents when they get wobbly so their heads don't smash into the ice (like his fight against Gazdic).

You may not support fighting, and that is really ok. However, I am sure you can see the difference between an outright goon and an enforcer.

Gillies does not deserve to play hockey anymore. Seriously, slamming a 19 year old's face to the ice?

Gillies was bound to do something like this at some point, he's basically just an psychotic animal. Management can't be surprised by this, it's who Gillies is. Each day that goes by with this POS on the team, I lose a little bit of respect for management. They are essentially condoning this type of behavior by having him on the roster.

I agree wholeheartedly. The guy is a lunatic, he can't stop himself from crossing the line. I truly hope management does the right thing here.

In general I believe in fighting in hockey. What Gillies did though was not fighting, it was gooning! That head slam to the ice should be a half season suspension. I hope we cut him right now!

That was disgusting! I fully support guys like McGrattan, I even respect the guy greatly. That stuff does not belong on any hockey rink.

That's good. He was very good the past couple months when I've watched him. Allowing him playing time in the ECHL will help him.

A brand new coaching staff, being a young team, and a lack of AHL vets are probably all contributing. I wouldn't have been surprised if they started off hot, or they started off pretty cold. Hopefully by game 15 or so they start pulling it together more consistently.

They are essentially a rebuild.

Out is:
Ben Street
Chad Billins
Blair Jones
Corey Locke
Carter Bancks
Dean Arsene
Derek Smith

That is a heck of a lot of AHL experience and leadership, and guys playing key roles (they lost their top 3 defencemen, and arguably their top line center for starters, plus some depth and leaders). Team has to find its' footing again. Judging by the talent and depth on the team, and the remaining leadership, I think they will eventually.

I watched both games, and the final score wasn't really representative of the play. Normally those are the types of games that end 3-2.

Ortio played like hot garbage in both games, about 7-8 of the 11 goals he surrendered were ones that he could/should have had.

Looks like Wolf has returned to full practice and not in any sort of non-contact jersey.

Nearhos speculated that Wolf could be a healthy scratch tonight judging by the lines. Thiessen's also expected to get the start.

We'd better win both games against the Phantoms or I'm going to be drinking a lot this weekend.
