I dunno, Farrell is capable of great things, and most would of had a negative reaction to McConaughey being chosen as the lead only a couple years ago. In the right role, Farrell could do just as well imo (especially if he's not an "American" character).

I agree with you actually, i think he's good when he has a good script. He was good in In Bruges. He and McConaughey sure are attracted to some really bad scripts though. I'll never fully forgive McConaughey for fools gold.

I always thought Farrell had the chops and the opportunity to become a superstar, but whatever reason that just never occurred.
I certainly don't mind this casting choice given the amazing production quality this series has already shown us.

McConaughey was coming off of Mud prior to TD, which showed some of the range needed to nail the TD character.
I've never seen Farrell perform well in anything in which he had to do more than play himself. That includes In Bruges, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

For anyone skeptical of Vaughn in a role like this, see The Cell. I thought he was darned good in that. And he did fairly well with Psycho as well.

It's tough not to consider anyone a step down from s01, the two leads were great, and McConaughey was stunningly good, just brilliant.
The choices are good if for nothing else as it starts the buzz. I'm trusting that Those In Charge aren't just throwing these guys together hoping it works.
My biggest fear is they try to crank it up a bit and ruin it. A big part of why s01 worked so well is that they were able to continue to build the dramatic tension to the end, the layering of plot points was almost perfect, it had a natural pace.
If they go too far, if they overblow the characters, if they make the plot complex just for the sake of complexity...there so make ways they can break it.
They don't need to better the last one, all they need to do is stay true to the vision that brought s01 to fruition.

It's not just about the actors people, it's also about the writing and the directing. A good writer and director can make Haley Berry win an Oscar...

If only Monster's Ball actually had good writing and directing... but I get your point.

Vaughan has chops, he just hasn't showed it in years.
Clay Pigeons
Psycho
Return To Paradise
He showed nice range and depth in all of those films.
I can't wait for Season 2. They could've cast Howard Stern and Big Bird and I would still be geeked up for Season 2.

Really, I thought the acting (JLO mostly, but no great props to Vaughn either) was the worst part of that movie. It had all the opportunity to be a great successor to Silence of the Lambs, but came up well short.
I'll still have this PVRed and on my must watch for sure though. Hope I'm proven wrong about Vince, willing to admit it if I am.
I think Colin Farrell will do better than he does.

Obviously, but directors and writers can only do so much. Most times when you start out with you end up with .

As trackercowe said, that movie also had good writing and directing, but as he also said, I get your point.
I have oft argued how a good director (and good lines from the writers) will get a great performance from an actor that may not be great. Dean Norris in Breaking Bad is a great example. Very good in Breaking Bad. However, I haven't really seen him be good in anything else. Under the Dome, guest spots on other cop shows, all average to bad.
So for True Detective, which has shown to have good direction and writing, I will watch Vince and hold my breath. I don't think he'll be bad, to be fair, he just wouldn't have been my first choice (or second, or fifth, etc.)

I disliked both McConaughey and Harrelson as actors before true detective. Now I somewhat respect them.
Good writing and directing can make a camel act like Russel Crowe.
I guess we will wait and see.

Also, passion for a project can do wonders. I think that one of the reasons Breaking Bad turned out the way it did is due to the fact that everyone seemed to love working on that show and they totally bought into the creative direction headed by Vince Gilligan.
Even Norris' character started kind of hokey, almost working as part of the comic relief until Saul was introduced. As the show evolved and the actor became more personally connected to the character and material you could see Norris ramp it up. Especially in the final 8.

Vaughn and Farrell are a big drop off but they are still well above average for a TV series. The truth is that outside of a very small handful of actors the cast for season 2 was destined to be a drop off in actor quality. They totally nailed it on the first try and chances are it was always going to be impossible to replicate the magic & chemistry that Harrelson and McConaughey shared in those roles. I just hope the writing continues to be top notch as if that's the case then Vaughn and Farrell should be able to pull it off.
