my guess
COL: Jones
FLA: Drouin (Huberdeau and Drouin is a scary good combo)
CGY: MacKinnon

I think Florida would take Mackinnon and we would get Drouin if those were the standings.

Would anyone trade Bart or Gaudreau and a first to get a second top three pick? Are these guys that much better or sure deals?

I would do that in a heart beat! I wonder if the other teams would but I think this would be perfect for a new GM to come in and put his stamp on the team. I think Gaudreau + Granlund might be a bit of a strech but something along those lines would work. If something like this happened, I think it would give the fans something to look forward to and be excited about.

I would do that in a heartbeat. Especially with Gaudreau.
I can't see either Colorado or Florida doing it but it would be great if they did and I would be trying very hard to see if the Flames can make it happen.

Well, the other teams that are in the top 3/5 have been in rebuild mode for quite a while. I would think they would need more established prospects for them to get out of the rebuild funk. Colorado for example has some pretty solid centres and can use some extra wingers that are only a year or two away from being NHLers.
Florida also seems to be in the same boat.
Maybe also sweeten the pot for those teams by adding some established NHLers as well. Say Cammaleri, Stempniak, Hudler, Giordano or Wideman.
Basically, I'm of the opinion that you do whatever it takes to get as many top 5 picks this year as possible and that includes selling off our promising prospects.

Tough call. It could be worth it, but we might be better off with Sven or Gaudreau + whoever we pick at ~15. The lack of organizational depth would persuade me to avoid trading young pieces for better young pieces. I know everyone loves to say quality>quantity, but that's just not always true. IMO, you only choose one prospect over two if the jump in quality is significant and almost guaranteed. Is that the case here? It seems close, but I would be very cautious with a move like that.

If the Avs want Jones they would be able to get him at the #1, #2 or #3 position so no need for them to make that trade.

Florida has strong pieces in goal and on defence. Huberdeau is a left winger, so they would pick MacKinnon.

Not if Feaster tells them "we're picking Jones, if you want him, let's talk"

It would be nice, but I don't see any team with a top 5 pick trading it unless the return is ridiculous.
Lets put it this way, if you had a top 5 pick and you were offered Geaudreau Granlund and a pick in the range of 25-30, would you take it? Not a chance.
Sven plus the pick around 15/16 may get you pick 6-8, not sure about top 5 though.

The Flames have a terrible history when it comes to the Draft. I just don't have any confidence in the Flames Management, Scouting, and even in the players right now, give or take a few players.

I just want to see the Flames draft MacKinnon or Drouin. If they are available when we pick. Even the big Fin C Barkov would be a nice pick.
If MacKinnon is gone i would like Fester to take Drouin at LW and with their second 1st round pick the Oil King Center 6 ' 190 Curtis Lazar.
If you have seen him play he is going to have an even bigger season next year as he is not on the #1 line and is on the second PP but yet has 38 goals.
It would not shock me at all to see the kid hit the 90 pt range.
or 6'1 198 OHL Center Bo Horvat, excellent face off man plays on PP and PK 33 goals, or 6'5 210 QMJHL Center Frederik Gauthier.
No going off the board Fester and John NCAA. No project picks.

that's why we must be thankful to finally get a lottery (top 5) pick. the probabilities are just so much higher here, where you aren't picking out of a high number of relatively equal prospects. Each draft there will likely be a handful of "a cut above" type kids, and now hopefully the flames have a chance to get these higher probability prospects.
Flames haven't had the luxury of getting a lottery pick in the last 15 years (we had the 6th pick in 98 i think). I just don't see a precedent set by the powers that be to F this up.

I really like the look of Gauthier for the St Louis pick. Smart 2-way power forward, 6'5" centreman. RW Adam Erne looks good, and RW Lekohnen could be a late-round steal with the Pittsburgh pic.

My draft list for our top pick. I've never seen these players play past youtube, so this is from youtube and reading forums only.
1) MacKinnon (Toews with better hands and speed but slightly smaller)
2) Drouin (Patrick Kane but bigger and potentially better hands (if even possible))
3) Jones (Erik Johnson with much higher hockey IQ)
4) Barkov (Anze Kopitar w/ slightly more assists and slightly less goals)
5) Lindholm (Peter Forsberg lite – basically Forsberg at 90% minus the injuries)
6) Monahan (Patrice Bergeron / Ryan Kesler)
7) Nischushkin (Wild Card because of his KHL status. Alexei Yashinish)

I personally wouldn't take a defensemen until the Pens pick if all other ratings were close. Take the franchise forward (hopefully a Center) with the Flames pick and take the elite forward with the Blues pick (assuming they make the playoffs).
