Outside of goalies as mentioned earlier; any prospects on Ottawa worth looking at? They look like a lock for the playoffs and have tons of cap space this year and next (but I assume would still like to have a fill in for Karlsson for the playoffs).
Gonchar is playing better this year, amazing considering he is 39, but always was one of the smartest and most skilled offensive defenseman in the league...though he is a UFA at the end of the year.

"Feaster didn't get much for Iginla because he's a UFA, a pure rental. Plus the Pens were making moves quickly, if he had the chance to wait till the deadline he could've gotten more as prices went up. At least we got a 1st rounder for him, even if it is 26-30th overall."
"Of course Feaster was only able to get a middling prospect and a 2nd rounder for Bouwmeester. Bouwmeester was signed for another year, which means teams have less flexibility for the following season, he wouldve been worth more if his contract was expiring. Also, Feaster waited till the deadline, and so teams knew he was under time pressure, he might have gotten more if he'd moved him earlier. Besides, late 1st rounders are overrated anyways, a 26-30th overall pick only has about a 20-25% chance of ever being a roster player anyways."
"Feaster got the best return he could get under the difficult circumstance, of offering the best player at his position available in the NHL today. The fact that the entire hockey world is laughing in derision is no indication that the return is anything less than fair."

So just a thought, if New Jersey is interested in Bouwmeester (yes, I know it's Eklund suggesting it), what could they give up? I doubt their first is in play since they are hosting the draft (Which means they will forfeit their 2014 first round pick), but a prospect like Jon Merrill and the Devils 2nd round pick could be a good start

not a huge fan. I think Bouwmeester has to fetch a 1st + to make sense ... stockpiling picks gives you the option of packaging them in order to trade up. Bobby Mac thinks Bouwmeesters return should be "significantly better" than Iginla's, so I want a 1st and a good prospect minimum. I like the Jarnkrok + DET 1st package that somebody suggested, I think that would be a good starting point for a discussion. Also, I hear Jarnkrok's biggest asset is his hockey sense, making him a natural target for us.

Yeah I do like the DET trade idea,
But its Jarnkrok or Nyquist (+1st) or Nothing. We will not be fleeced in any deal for our top d-man. No way in hell. Pay up or gtfo, I say.

Keep in mind Merrill is a prospect with a ton of potential and has more upside than Jarnkrok.

Whatever they get for Bouwmeester (if anything), I hope they concentrate on quality over quantity. 1st + prospect is great, but a one-for-one trade for a better prospect - preferably one with at least a sniff of NHL experience already - would be much better IMO.
Whatever happens, there's no reason to sell low in this case. Lots of opportunities ahead to trade Jbo and I don't imagine his stock will drop (he's going to look like, and be, our best player for at least the rest of this year). The big question is whether he wants out of Calgary now, and a chance at the playoffs this year.

1st + Filppula ( only if Filppula resigns with us, if not, an extra 1st pick from Detroit).
Yes.

While that's funny, fans getting upset because of players they've never heard or seen before is one of the most annoying fan traits.

On December 20th 1995 the Calgary Flames traded my favourite flame / favourite player in the NHL for some prospect that I had never heard of before....I was a very sad 8 year old for the rest of Christmas.
That didn't turn out so bad in the long run so yah I understand where you are coming from....I just wish that prospect I never heard of could have won the cup in Calgary, hopefully he gets to in Pittsbrough.

Yup... Happens every draft. People see where the Flames are drafting, reads about two-three guys that central scouting says will get drafted there. Flames draft someone who they haven't become an expert in?
Pandemonium.

Lebrun:Price for Bouwmeester is high
Quote:
Perhaps the biggest name left on the trade market is Jay Bouwmeester.
The Calgary Flames don’t have to necessarily move him, he’s got one more year left on his deal (at $6.6 million) so he’s not a pending unrestricted free agent forcing the NHL club to seek immediate asset return.
"I think they move Bouwmeester," one NHL team executive told ESPN.com Friday. "But they want a lot for him."
Central Division rivals Detroit and St. Louis are teams that have interest in Bouwmeester, no question. The Blues crave a top-4, left-handed blueliner who can play alongside either right-handed stud Alex Pietrangelo or Kevin Shattenkirk.
The Red Wings don’t need anyone to pay anyone’s salary, that’s not an issue. It’s all about the asking price from the Flames and whether Detroit could live with giving up that kind of asset package -- whatever it might be.
The Los Angeles Kings are another possibility, and they are definitely on the lookout for help on defense. There was hope recently that top-four blueliner Willie Mitchell (knee) could play this season, but a source told ESPN.com Thursday that the Kings aren’t as hopeful now. Either way, the Kings were supposed to know more next week on Mitchell.
The Philadelphia Flyers are also believed to have some interest in Bouwmeester and they certainly should. They need a premium puck-moving blueliner, there’s no question.

Management and ownership are probably too stubborn to retain part of his salary. They won't pay for a player not to play for them.
