The last thing I'd compare the Flames to is someone young and attractive.
This team is more like the girl who was young and pretty when you started dating, but quickly turned into a fat old sea hag. You stay in an abusive relationship in the hope that one day she might get her act together and go back to the way she used to be, but she never does. Until one day you wake up to find she's handcuffed you to the bed, robbed you, stripped you down naked, and left you to stew in a puddle of your own urine and shame.

I try not to be too melodramatic when it comes to hockey fandom. I have definitely resisted the temptation to join the "blow it up" torch and pitchfork mob. However, somehow, last night feels like a low point/turning point in the history of the franchise. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks.

It's been this way for years now, bounging around between 9 - 14 spots. Changing coaches is just putting lipstick on a pig.
I can't believe we all act surprised, myself included.

yup...not sure if that is simply media play or whether he actually believes that?
ROR is a good player; he's hardly a franchise player. Anyone who thinks that must also think guys like Kessler, Koivu, Bergeron, Dubinsky et al are "franchise" players... There's other players I'd choose as the building block for a franchise. These guys are nice pieces, not franchises

At least they score goals.
Blowing leads and meltdowns are annoying though. We really missed Kipper last night, hope he's back soon!

Also heard a hilarous stat at the end of the game.
Avs have been outshot something like 350 ish to 150 ish in the last 10 ish games or so, and yet they outshot the Flames 36 - 23 last night. That was when the Flames had 4 minutes of PP in the last 6 or so minutes, down by one, after giving up a huge lead. lol.

Depends what the definition of contender is. Are all 16 playoff teams contenders? If so then the Flames are indeed just a player or two away from making the top 8 in the conference.
If a contender is a division champion then no they are not close.

One of the most embarassing games I've ever watched. I knew right away as soon as it was 3-0 that it was over. Just like clockwork, as soon as the 2nd started the players all stopped skating and you could just feel it happening.
But I ain't even mad. This is our destiny. I can only hope the team goes winless for the next little while so management is FORCED to sell off at the deadline. After listening to Feaster blabber on about how management is on board with ''improving the team at all costs'', it's pretty clear to me that as long as their is a chance of making the playoffs, nothing will change. The only way we will be sellers at the deadline is if we go on a long losing streak.
Our goaltending sucks. Our D sucks. Our effort sucks. Our arena sucks. Even the heroin beer seems to have lost some potency this year. I honestly hope the Canucks lay down the beating of the century, instead of giving us all false hope again.

What a frustrating game to watch. I don't remember the last time I saw this team play a good 60 minute game. I have seen a ton of great 20 minute performances and a few really go 40 minute games but it has been years since we saw a complete game.

I can't bring myself to cheer for the team to lose, I just wonder when there are changes going to be made that need to be made. It has been shown it is not the GM and it is not the coach. There are very few other common denominators that have been around for the duration of this inconsistent period and I have a really hard time pointing fingers at Kipper as the reason the flames do not play a full game night in and night out.

Flames identity used to be work ethic. Green hard hat.
Now it is nothing. GM and coach can only do so much, player gotta play. On any given night only half the team shows up to play.

This illustrates the pathology of the current situation. The lineup is not good enough to make the playoffs, yet somehow there's still this idea that they should be competitive, so everyone gets to feel extra awful about the team failing.
Because the management is either paralysed or in denial, Iginla gets to give the same humiliating answers to the same humiliating questions year after year. Why are we losing? He can't just say that it's because they suck. He has to try to pretend there are some magical answers deep down within that they can find if they just dig hard enough.
Well I think that's just senseless torture at this point.
But if you admit that you suck, then you can at least move forward. The idea that if only they worked harder or if only the coach was smarter, they'd be right up there is clearly nonsense. It's a badly constructed team. You can't do #### without centers. The management screwed up. Just admit it and move on.

It is sad that the more positive crowd that felt that the Flames are making the playoffs and that Sutter was the reason why they sucked and that this year was going to be a marked improvement is more or less gone. While I did not agree with them, they did bring a certain Benny Hinn attendee fervor to the site.
At the very least we should still have some of the "That was an exciting hockey game, I will take a loss that is exciting over a boring Sutter game anyday" crowd left. Last nights game was exciting, lots of offense, back and forth, momentum shifts, I would think that it would have been a textbook game for up tempo hockey.
The depressing thing is that according to Elliotte Friedman on the FAN, the Flames are actually not done and the rumour amongst execs in the league is that Feaster will be out there improving his team.

You seem like an intelligent person, so I hope you'll take this as friendly advice: you have to let go of this Brent Sutter thing you do in every thread. I'm pretty much at a point where I'll just start scrolling past your messages, and it would be a shame to lose your perspective on other issues.

..maybe he's not quite ready.

Matt Stajan gets pushed off the puck way too easily too, but he still gets ice time. That isn't a very good excuse. Stajan should take over the Bambi nickname from Adam Pardy. The number of times he falls down and gets knocked down during a game is ridiculous.

Matt Stajan is also +7 while almost all other skaters on the team are on the minus side. And he's like the only center in the lineup. So the ice time is understandable.
