Calgary puck is smug but defintely not "dinks". The crowd here is older and it was only like 5-6 years ago when people got seriously called out and jumped all over for bad posts. Also there is at least some moderation and accountability here unlike other places on the internet.

I think your refering to a Switched Plug which are common everywhere. Essentially the circuit runs to the light switch and then to the plug so the switch can break contact. This application is best for things that you leave on all the time such as Lamps, Portable Fans ect.
If what your refering to is a "dimmer" switch on the plug then its essentially the same application, limiting current while maintaining voltage.
In reality tho your question is moot since all plugs run back to a Circuit Breaker making every plug have a switch.. essentially.

Any parents here have any feedback or advice regarding screening for chromosome deficiencies at 11-14 weeks of pregnancy? My wife and I pretty much have to decide this week if we want to do it- because it is not a definitive yes or no result, we are both leaning towards not getting it, but I am wondering if we will regret it. Advice?

I have noticed this for a long time and wondering what the exact rule is when stopping for a pedestrian on a crosswalk. It seems like half the drivers will resume driving as soon as the pedestrian has cleared his/her lane, while others will wait until the pedestrian has made it all of the way to the other side. Any thoughts?

My wife was pulled over for this and given a warning. Officially you need to wait until the pedestrian completely clears the street.

You wife is pretty lucky. If I'm not mistaken that's a $250 or $500 ticket.

I always though it was half way across the street. Like once they have cleared one full direction of travel. I thought this was what was taught in drivers training, but my mind may have been warped those lessons from long ago.

I troutmanned this from the interenet. It's from the states but I would think it would apply here as well, since our Traffic Safety Act only says you need to Yield to Pedestrians.
There’s confusion over when a driver can proceed through a crosswalk after a pedestrian has cross by.
Do you have to wait until the pedestrian is all of the way across and on the sidewalk? Or can you drive on when the pedestrian is no longer at risk from being hit by your car?
It’s a question that even local police officers couldn’t agree on , some saying all the way across and others saying just when out of the danger zone, although all said they wouldn’t ticket anyone unless the pedestrian was at risk. DMV spokeswoman Jan Mendoza in Sacramento said the DMV couldn’t answer that question but pointed to the CHP for a definitive answer.
CHP Officer Jon Sloat said the answer is that you can proceed once the pedestrian is not at any risk of being hit, even if he suddenly whirled around and headed back in front of your car.
“There’s nothing in the vehicle code” about waiting until the pedestrian has reached the sidewalk, he said. “You just have to yield to them” until it’s safe to proceed.
And Sonoma County Superior Court Commissioner Carla Bonilla, who runs the local Traffic Court, seems to agree.
“There is a case by case issue here. I do not think the person technically has to be up on the second curb for the car to then drive on. However, clearly the intent of the law is for the pedestrian to be out of harm’s way before the car leaves,” she said in a statement.

hmmm odd, I remember in driver's ed being taught that you have to wait until they cross the whole street. Of course, no one actually does this because its stupid, but I'm pretty sure that was the official rule.

I failed my first road test on this, about a block into it. They let me finish before telling me, but I did indeed right turn through a crosswalk while a pedestrian was just finishing crossing on the far side of 36 St SE.
I still wait for the crosswalk to clear, one upside being that oncoming traffic can see me stopped which may be the difference to them noticing the pedestrian they are about to mow over.

That's what I was taught as well (20+ years ago), but I remember hearing a couple of years ago that they changed it so the pedestrian has to be off the street entirely.
If it's a small road, I'll wait for the person to cross, but there are some roads where no one would get through an intersection if you waited for every pedestrian to be completely across (like pretty much any left turn downtown).
Speaking of which...something for the gear grinder thread: The countdown timers they have on crosswalks now are a pain in the ass because even though they're not supposed to, people will start crossing the street if they believe they can get across before the timer hits zero. I'm guilty of doing this as well when I'm walking, but it's very annoying when you're driving.

I thought it would be different if your making a right-hand turn after the pedestrian has cleared out of your way. That would be impossible to get anywhere downtown if that was the case.
