It's different for everyone, but I eat four times a day and I have had excellent results.

Could be.
I just know I hardly touch pop or juice. There is nothing as vile as pop, IMO. But I will eat a bit of other junk food from time to time.

I actually ate some Pringles the other night and ended up puking.
Seems like if I eat too much junk food, I get sick too.

those calculators aren't exact science, but for the majority of people they are a good general guideline
everybody is going to be different though
if you want an exact number on RMR there are breathing tests that most fitness centers/nutritionists have that will tell you a very accurate number

Would you happen to know what the cost would be for something like that? I would love to have an accurate number.

The biggest issue I have with these starvation diets (aside from the obvious health risks they pose) is the fact that when you're off them you're going to gain the weight right back. You need a lifestyle change because obviously you were living a very unhealthy lifestyle that lead to the need to starve yourself.
You're much better off in the long run if you just consume about 1800 calories per day while dieting/exercising. Then when you get to your optimal weight just increase your caloric intake by a few hundred a day. There's a ton of research out there about crash diets where people get to their desired weight and then go back to their same bad habits before the diet.
Teach yourselves how to live healthy now and it will continue for the rest of your life. A great start would be to just eat 4-500 calories below your daily suggested level. You'll lose a pound a week. Do that for however long it takes to get to your desired weight and you'll be much better off in the long. It might take longer but it's much better for you.

I'm not starving, and I'm losing 2-3 pounds per week on average (a number recommended to me as healthy by my physician). When I reach my ultimate goal, I will slowly increase my intake per week until I have found my nominal level. This has been and will continue to be a complete lifestyle change. I don't look at food the same way I used to. Same goes for exercise.
If I ate 1800 calories per day, with the resources/time available to me for exercise, I would never lose weight. Good advice, but it isn't necessary for everyone. The major thing to take away from all of this (as you mentioned) is to commit yourself to a life long lifestyle change, which I am confident I have done.

Perhaps 'myth' is too strong of a word ... but definitely 'unnecessary'. Plenty of science referenced in his posts too if anyone cares to dig deeper.
I've gone back to eating three regular meals a day, with the biggest meal after my workout. All meals are consumed in an 8 hour window followed by 16 hours of 'fasting'. I've experienced my best results in years after switching to this method of eating a few months ago.

Thanks for the link. Really interesting stuff there.
Can you give me an example of the foods you eat and your calorie intake?

^^^ well, after seeing that I am even hesitant to put up my message. Thats amazing stuff, DA!! truly it is!!
I hit the scales at the gym last night and found myself within 5 pounds of MY goal weight. I'm pretty happy with that considering where I started 7 months ago.
The "gurus" tell me that my optimal weight should be somewhere between 150 and 185. Frankly, I cant see myself at that number. I just dont think I would carry it well.
I set my goal weight to 195 and I am currently at 200 even. I figure for a 6 ft. tall, 47 year old guy, 195 should be alright.
Congrats to all the "Biggest Losers"!!

I've found it at the SE Costco near Heritage and Deerfoot. It's in a refrigerated cooler on a short wall at the back of the store (NW? corner), right beside the walk-in produce cooler and around the corner from all the cheese.

Just joined a gym, first workout in years this morning. Nice and light just easing back into it. But tomorrow I am going to attempt a spin class....I haven't ridden a bike in years. I predict pain and wobbly legs...
Looking to lose 20-25lbs. Need to be a little leaner and meaner for hockey. Some good advice in this thread, I will have to check out a number of those sites for meals and eating tips.
