Why is the contract scaring you? You dont need to be on a contract.
Check telus.com for what is available to you...

My concern is how many HD streams I will get, telus.com doesn't tell you (ie 3HD or whatever).
As well, Im not a huge fan of having to sign a 3yr agreement to get a HDPVR. Shaw offers a free rental with many of their offers.

Well, you said you can get for $45 from Telus what would be $86 from Shaw. If you don't want to sign a contract, then that $45 turns into $55, (or whatever the HDPVR rental fee is), so you are sill ahead of Shaw in terms of pricing.

The Telus website is weird. When you go to check for Optik availability, they ask you 3 questions. Do you have a Telus phone, do you use Telus high speed internet and whether or not you live in an apartment or condo.
If you say 'yes' to having Telus high speed internet, the website will tell you how many HD streams you area is eligible for. If you answer 'no' to this question, it doesn't give you any information other than whether or not Optik is available in you area.
Give this a try and and see if it works for you.

Jesus, I just looked at what you get with Telus in terms of channels, its pretty much barebones.
It'll cost me more than what I'm paying with shaw to get any decent selection of channels. To get Popular Choices, Sports, Lifestyle packages is another $21, and none of those are HD. Adding HD makes it even more expensive. And even then I'm losing a good chunk of channels.
Looks like Shaw is indeed a better deal.

All depends on what channels you want. I pay less with Telus for less overall channels but I actually get more channels I actually care about.

So the Telus tech came out yesterday to upgrade me to the 3 HD and 1 SD bandwidth. Initially he thought I had just moved, as did the CSR's on the phone. Not sure where they got that from.
Anyway, I told him I had to call in to get activation codes earlier in the morning and he said they basically did what he was there to do. He didn't actually have to physically come out to my place. Since he did though, he checked that everything was setup properly and was telling me a few things about Optik TV, nothing earth shattering. He did mention that in the next while you can be watching TV and be on facebook at the same time, which might be neat for some.
I gotta say, the ability to watch/record up to 3 HD channels, PVR anywhere, remote recording, better interface/menus, XBOX 360 Elite all for $30 LESS per month than Shaw was charging. Telus kills Shaw IMO. I can't find any reason I am not better off.
I say to anyone sitting on the fence, get a move on, you will not be disappointed!

Very reason why I switched. I saved $40 with Telus than if I had stayed with Shaw. Best decision I made and now I get to pick and choose my HD channels and not have to contend with all the extra garbage shaw "packages"

I'm not 100% sure, but I swear I was just looking at a page that showed Telus channel bundles as well for HD.
You can select individual HD channels with Telus?

I called Telus to see if I could sign up for Optik, but they said all the ports are full in my neighborhood, but that I can get the Telus Satellite service.
Any one else get this response, and if so what should I do. Should I wait for a port to open up, or just go with satellite for now and trust that Telus will change me over in a timely manner. How quickly does Telus add ports to match demand.
Of course, my other choice is to sign up for Shaw service.

What area do you live in? There shouldnt really be a port issue.

PsnaP, you seem to know your stuff with regards to Optik TV.
I'm curious if you can answer a question of mine...
My Telus modem/router is connected to the XBOX 360 via an ethernet cable. Can I connect an external hard drive to the modem/router via ethernet cable or USB and access said hard drive through my XBOX (via ethernet cable) and my macbook (wireless connection)?
I've just confused myself so hopefully you know what I'm getting at. I'd like to be able to access data on a hard drive using my macbook and/or the XBOX.
Thanks in advance.

No, the usb port on the modem is not functional. If you want to access data from your macbook on your xbox, there is a program out there that will allow you to do so. But I cant remember for the life of me what its called.
Hope that helps.

You may be referring to Connect360? Which I do have, but the XBOX only allows you to connect either using ethernet cable or wireless, not both. Since it is already connected via ethernet cable, I guess I'm SOL.
