This discussion is reminiscent of one of Backlund's earlier renewals. Let's hope for the same outcome long term!

Just looking through Evolving-Hockey.com, they see a better than 80% chance that Bennett signs a 2.8M deal for no more than 3 years. They've been pretty accurate in the past with their predictions.

Eric Francis with an article discussing the chances of a team offer sheeting Bennett. I believe Treliving will move both Frolik and Brodie/Stone to get the extra cap space that may be needed to sign everyone this summer. Interesting to think about though.

Seems like Francis is stirring the flames pot lately. Suggesting offer sheets and huge numbers on tkachuk. Typical Francis, will look to get any type of attention he can get.

Im no Francis apologist, but those are both legit things imo.
The offer sheet thing is less likely only because it has to be a big enough offer to make BT walk away, and i just dont believe any GM sees him as someone worth doing that for, but you never know.
The Tkachuk thing is real because the precedence has been set with other deals.

I think we will see a Tkachukless team for October if he wants that kind of cash. BT is not going to go full maple leaf

Bennett falls under the 2nd round pick offer sheet compensation:
https://www.capfriendly.com/offer-sheet-calculator
If a team offers Bennett north of 3m, I would just take the second round pick.

I suppose it comes down to what team and how high that 2020 2nd round pick is expected to be as well.

If a team signs a player to an offer sheet and it is matched what are the trade rules after that? Could the flames match the offer then trade Bennett before the end of the season or do they need to keep him for a full year?

To me it would depend on term.
Though a 2nd isnt really all that exciting either...depending on the offering club.

I would think if someone offersheets bennett at 3.25 that the Flames would take the pick, not because they don't like the player or don't want to match, but because they are so limited by cap considerations that they can't match 3.25.
They have roughly 14 million in cap space and signing tkachuk will eat at least half of that, but depending on performance bonuses, I believe they are really playing with about 11 million in Capspace right now.
3.25 million dollar bennett does not fit into those plans.
He may not even fit at 2.5

Lol, ya ok. You and New Era's irrational hate of Sam Bennett is comical.

$14.5 million (not factoring in bonuses) for Tkachuk, Bennett, Mangiapane, Hathaway and 2 goalies.
Not insurmountable at all, but not much room for error. And no room to make a bet on a guy like Bennett for long term.
You can see why they want to include Frolik in any forward trade.

Sam Bennett contract negotiations.
This team shows up completely gutless in the playoffs except for a select few, and Bennett putting up 5 points in 5 games while being the most impactful forward in the series and the tune never changes for some.
$2.5M is 3% of the salary cap.
$3M is 3.6% of the salary cap.
$3.5M is 4.2% of the salary cap.
$4M is 4.8% of the salary cap.
“Give him away for a 2nd”. He’s one of the few players on this team that plays with an edge. Yeah, he needs to continue to develop consistency in the regular season, and I think he will. I also believe this team needs more players that carry themselves the way Sam Bennett does, not less.
I also think looking at how much cap we have available today isn’t worth very much, because it will likely change - and significantly so, given Frolik wants out (and has trade value), and that Brodie is likely being moved to make room for the youth (and he has trade value).
Re-signing Bennett and Tkachuk doesn’t pose an issue, we have the space or will make the space to ensure both get deals good for the team. The issue to me is how to improve the roster and address what is lacking while being faced with an 8th defenceman making $3.5M and a 13th forward making $5.75M. The positive side of me thinks Neal could bounce back, but I have no clue where Stone and his salary fit in.

Sam Bennett should not be seen as the expendable one here. The Flames simply need to offload Frolik to Ottawa (seriously it makes too much sense) and they'll have plenty of room to give Bennett a good contract.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see Frolik land in Arizona. No future commitment, is an advanced stats fan favourite, and could likely be had for a 3rd (which Arizona has two of this year).

That also makes sense, given that they'll likely have to replace Richard Panik who is a UFA.

Agree, this team needs more Sam Bennett's, at 22 he was our best heart and soul player this side of Tkachuk, I think it would be an epic mistake to allow Bennett to go anywhere without an over payment

Frolik has a limited NTC with a little doubt Ottawa is on there.

Where was Tkachuck in any of his NHL playoff appearances? I was extremely disappointed in both of his series. I agree with you on Bennett though.
