I completely agree. There has to be a Division that is willing to stick their hands in the filth so the rest of the Federation can keep theirs clean.
At some point...and maybe we saw it a little with the Defiant, but at some point they had to realize that while you're taking plant samples some other bastard is going to be trying to kill you.
No real reason why. Its just a thing that happens.

The Defiant Class is definitely proof they have people in the Federation always focused on war. The Defiant was built and flying almost immediately after Wolf-359 which means someone, somewhere had already done the planning for it.

I've always found that somewhat strange, not the Defiant specifically, but the lack of 'Division of Duties.'
The Enterprise D was awesome. She's a big ol' Bitch thats tough as nails and can take on all challengers but she can also study plants on Surata IV.
They have 'Medical' ships, but I guess if you're not travelling in fleets then every ship has to sort of do everything.
But the new ships seem to suck. And also any ol' clown can graduate from the Academy.

That's just always been Star Fleet's thing. Build ships for science and then arm em to the tits. Whether it's medical, exploratory, general research. They all had a focus on some sort of science. And then they just slapped on some phaser arrays, some forward and aft torpedo launchers and shield emitters to go toe-to-toe with equivalent sized ships from other groups. They're all built to be flying cities so you compare the footprint to other races and they're these bulky monstrosities that have a severe tactical disadvantage if a fight ever comes down to manual targeting.

Unless you get a bad software update (Yamato), or a puny Jem'Hadar ship flies into your deflector dish (Odyssey) or you guess their shield modulation frequency (Ent-D 257.4 MHz). That last one must not be hard, there's likely a narrow band for it to be in and you just brute force all the frequencies.

I just envision the ship getting into trouble...
"Shields Up! Red Alert!"
And then all of the kids in school have to get up from their desks and grab a phaser-rifle.
"We have to repel boarders? Again??"

Why were there so many families and civvies on the Saratoga? It's basically the Reliant from last century with very little space. Why take them all into Wolf 359 and not put them into the lifeboats before you head in? DS9 is ruined!

Also...thanked for ' then arm 'em to the tits.'
That made me chuckle.
"Slap some guns on that bitch!"
Peter Weller knew what he was about!

There is absolutely no explanation for why they brought Civilians to Wolf-359.
I know you're in a hurry. Put them escape pods and jettison them before you get there or something. The escape pods dont change a ship's ability to fight, it just means that whoever is left is boned if the ship goes down. But those people understood that risk and accepted it.

Or Geordi learned this secret trick from Scotty from ST III.

My headcanon is the Vulcan captain of the Saratoga wanted to divorce his wife but couldn't due to his people's customs so he decided to fly them all into Wolf 359 for plausible deniability to get rid of her. It's only logical.

It still makes no sense that the Saratoga had so many civvies. It's not a Galaxy class. It's a 23rd century ship design that holds crew and their families. The entire escape pod Sisko got into was like 80% civilians/kids/families
The Saratoga is a Mirada class from the 23rd century. The crew complement of this size of ship is only 35!

So...what you're saying is...that its not all that many families to risk?
Can children be used as torpedos in a pinch?

If McCoy can do surgery on a torpedo he can modify a child to explode on impact for sure.
Maybe the Saratoga was operating as a Federation Magic School Bus at the time when it got drafted into the task force.

Okay. Well....now I need to see Miss Frizzle flying the Saratoga (waving out of a non-existent window) whilst firing her weaponized students at the Borg.
I think we all need that.
I know a guy.

Shields make no sense. Like why do they deplete. Just keep generating them.
