I really and honestly hope that the Coyotes turn things around now and make it work. Sucks so badly for the people of Glendale if it doesn't.

So there is no chance the team will be folding or moved within the next 5 years? Really hope support grows for that team there.

Well, the decision didn't happen on a Monday. Still, the lease agreement and the purchase of the team must be completed by Aug. 5 which falls on a Monday! http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...ticle12944823/

I was really hoping for it to fail, and the team to move, so we don't have to hear about this again.

This just delays the inevitable. The same issues will come up again.

Frankly, I don't even think we see this thread disappear too much

IMO, there's still a definite possibility that the team doesn't even make it to year 5.

Didn't see this mentioned... but according to this they are now the Arizona Coyotes.

As part of the agreement, the team will now be called the Arizona Coyotes, dropping the Phoenix name it carried since the franchise moved from Winnipeg in 1996.

I am extremely happy for personal reasons, as I love to go to games at jobing.com

And I am happy for Phoenix and for the league - I like that there is a team in the desert (and in one of the largest markets in the US)

Hopefully they can get things moving in the right direction and grow the fanbase

Gives a chance to see if things can improve with the promise of "stable ownership".

If not it buys time (4/5 years) for a new rink to be built in Seattle in advance of the move.

And how exactly does that work?

Why does that matter? It's not like these votes are cast based on the number of hands members of the audience raise.

I'll be spending a lot more winter days in the Phoenix area going forward so certainly good news.

The whole deal stinks. I was rooting for hockey to succeed in Phoenix — not for it to fail and be embalmed there.
I don't buy this argument. Perhaps some people, on high ticket items, will travel to adjacent counties to do their shopping, but most people are either too lazy or too unaware to do so on any regular basis. We could all save a few bucks by going out of my way in a number of ways every day, but the majority of us do not.

The general sentiment I'm seeing is opposing fans in the Phoenix area or fans who travel down there a lot are happy they get to keep seeing cheap hockey in Phoenix. This franchise is one 2-3 year stretch of bad play away from averaging 4,000 fans a game. Why the NHL has such a hard on to keep a team in a market destined to fail when there are markets destined to succeed out there speaks to the value of having top TV markets when making TV deals.

Quebec? A team would obviously succeed in Quebec, but that doesn't mean that moving a team there now would be an economic win for the NHL. I imagine there is a pretty large appetite in the NHL board room to enter any hockey mad market in the most lucrative way possible, which is almost certainly through expansion. Outside of Quebec and Toronto there isn't another market that could legitimately be labelled as "destined to succeed", there are a few unproven markets with serious question marks.

Bankruptcy by the owners or by the city could cause that to happen.

You've read the lease? I haven't had a chance, but I find it hard to believe that such a situation is not addressed, that would be leaving a massive hole in the agreement.

Oh I agree about the first part. The NHL loses a lot of money in any potential TV deal trading a top 10 TV market in the US for Canada's 7th or 8th biggest market. And after giving away another top 10 market in Atlanta, I don't think they want to be so quick to give another away.
