Well I certainly did not predict Germany's last two matches correctly. I was slightly off on both counts! Devastating stuff.

Effin Germans. Definitely not a fan, but it's hard not to be impressed by their play. Just so damn efficient.

I just like the rule in rugby union better. You collapse the scrum near the goal line and you can/will be punished with a penalty try. Except if you are South Africa and the year is 1995.
What is the NHL rule if one team has the goalie pulled and and there is a break-away and a player throws his stick and knocks the puck away as it is going into the net? Is it a penalty shot? Is there a goalie in the net? Is a goal given?
I think that is the more apt scenario. But I really don't know what the ruling is.

I guess this is the ruling.
Rule 26 - Awarded Goals 26.1 Awarded Goal – A goal will be awarded to the attacking team when the opposing team has taken their goalkeeper off the ice and an attacking player has possession and control of the puck in the neutral or attacking zone on, without a defending player between himself and the opposing goal, and he is prevented from scoring as a result of an infraction committed by the defending team.
I like that.

^the rule in rugby is actually more discretionary. Basically if a foul prevents a try from being scored (in an obvious manner) then the referee can award a penalty try. It's not only for collapsing the scrum. The scrum might collapse and no penalty try is awarded as well.
Don't worry though...the real world cup is only a year away!!

Yep. A penalty kick is as close to to a sure goal if you can take advantage. I like the fact that it gives the team an opportunity at a pretty easy goal, but they STILL have to step up and make it happen. It makes for exciting soccer.
Too much Ghana whining. They had their fair shot and blew it....twice.

A 100% sure goal being replaced with a penalty is not consequences, it's a benefit. That's pretty obvious.

No it's not, the ball being handed off the line is a sure goal. Penalties aren't as certain as people seem to think they are.
I didn't really care who won, I actually had both teams in my office pool oddly enough, but there's an injustice when a team gets nothing but benefit from a play like that. It's a loophole in the rules that really shouldn't be there.

Another great game, the quarters have all been amazing so far. Hoping Spain handles Paraguay because Germany and Spain colliding in the semis would be epic.

I don't like the idea of goals being awarded when the goal doesn't go across the line, something about that feels wrong (just like goals not being awarded when they do, ha).
It's still a sport after all, and players and teams can and need to play within the rules and step up. I like the fact that it's not an absolute and brings human decision making and drama into the equation. I think a penalty kick and a red-card is fair. 80% of the time, it should be enough, but it just gives the offending team the little bit of hope to make the game exciting.

Yup the Germans want another shot at the Spaniards after 2008.

Normally, I'd probably cheer for the underdog Paraguay team, but I'd like someone to beat Germany, and Spain has a better chance of that. Sure would be nice to see Torres finally pot one as well.

Shocking. Another good goal called back because of a mystery offside.

I never thought Germany would be explosive and Spain would be curing my insomnia.
10 passes and a flop.

I'll have to see it again but I believe the #7 was offside and jumped to head the ball.
That's enough to be interfering with play.
