At this point, nothing the Flames have done has been passed onto taxpayers in any way shape or form. To think that no money has been spent on this project to date, however, is blissfully ignorant.

Also, I'm actually not a fan either of announcing the forecoming announcement of information and then it doesn't happen...

...but at the end of the day, a) it's their project, it's their timeframe, and getting upset because you think it affects you is a futile exercise, and b) we should be so lucky that we have an ownership group that is willing to do something this ambitious. This isn't just simply a hockey arena, I can tell you that.

Maybe, knowing what is involved in a large-scale construction project, they shouldn't have come out six years ago with an announcement to stakeholders of "start getting excited! Arena announcement is imminent in the next few weeks"! And to make matters worse, doing the same thing numerous times between then and now. Irresponsible. The flood delays are understandable for sure, but the "get excited" nonsense happened years before the flood.
Would you like a tissue?

I'm not a fan of announcing announcements that don't happen... but I have no say in that. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Yep. Pretty sure they gambled and lost on that one. 18 months ago would have been the time to hold out the cup for public funds. Once the province announces cuts to municipal transfers and infrastructure projects, maybe even mothballing the SW ring road, there will be precious little enthusiasm in this city for throwing a few hundred million into a private project.

The get excited comment was when it was just the arena because they didn't own the Stampeders at the time. They bought them March 29 2012. They had to start from scratch after that.

This just in: Proof of purchase required to discuss anything Flames related on CP. If you haven't spent a dime on Adirondack merchandise or tickets, you can no longer discuss the farm team. Ditto with college prospects unless you can provide evidence you have donated to the alumni association.

So it's been nearly 3 years since they had to 'reset'.

It's been 2 years since Ron MacLean said the new arena project would be downtown.

I've lost count of the amount of times Ken King has mentioned the arena without actually divulging any information about the arena.

Maybe just shut up about it.

How many of those times were Ken King specifically calling a press conference to discuss the arena project, and how many were King attending an unrelated event and speaking about the arena project because he was asked about it?

I don't know, like I said, I lost count.

And get some Olympic money for it too? Maybe they know something we don't and are waiting for the next IOC bid.

Probably a lot. Back then it was just the Flames and Hitmen so they were likely looking at an arena and practice facility or secondary arena for the Hitmen.

Since then they acquired the Stampeders and The Roughnecks, and lately theres even been talk about a soccer team.

Not just a reset, but a whole rethink of the entire project.

I'm with Muta though, I think the thing is going to be nuts when they get it all together.

I guarantee we are going to at least submit some level of bid for the next available winter games. Will it get past the COC? Probably since Quebec doesn't have a regulation ski hill (haha, suck it, Gill.)

Well, the Flames have specifically invited me to season ticket holder events for at least 6 years now and then had KK stand up and give a talk at the event where he said there would be an exciting announcement in some completely unrealistic and unmet time frame.

My only problem with all of this is the continually saying 'exciting news in the next few weeks/months' and then years later no such news. If you don't know the time frame, then don't announce that you do! And don't do it again and again and again!

That is what I think as well. What Ron MacLean thought he was leaking was probably the original arena idea that was in the works. After the Flames managed the Stamps for a season and had a better understanding of their operations they probably then went back to the drawing board.

Exactly right. My thoughts exactly.

They had something in the works and then all of the parameters kept changing.

A project like this will transform Calgary's core I believe. I absolutely love Seattle for the fact they have the ball park/stadium district and bars all around. I love those types of districts.

I hope Calgary gets something like this.

It's annoying is all. I think it's OK that we're annoyed with it, there's no need for derision.

It should be an Arena, a stadium and an outdoor mall with bars.

Believe it or not, SpaceX has been looking to have some sort of Canadian presence. That's all I'm going to say.

Haha I'm just kidding.

Or am I?
