From what some people said on Reddit, it wasn’t the issue of giving him the captaincy. It was that Tkachuk wanted a clause in his contract that guaranteed him the C for all 8 years.
I totally get Brad’s decision not to do that. That’s a really selfish demand.

If this is true, just show that he is a "me" player not team player. Or he just say that and know the Flames not going for it so he has excuse to get out of town.

Awesome. Thanks for double-Czech-ing.
I'm always skeptical about those things because over the years, there have been many times a player has given an interview in his home country and someone does a poor Google-translate that makes it seem like he said one thing but actually was saying something different.
Of course, there are also times that the European players are more open in their native language, like Zadorov's comments about MacKinnon last year.

Have to agree. Forget selfish, thats insane.
'Players' dont win, 'Teams' win.
A contractual demand like that is so outlandish that its either patently false or completely true.
But, if true, yeah, Sutter gives a 'Hard No' and Treliving starts racking up his long-distance charges.

I actually can believe the captaincy not going to him being a real issue. The Tkachuks are a competitive bunch and when his younger brother over in Ottawa is the Captain it could very well bug him.

I just love how we were all hoping against hope that we would get Kyrou or Tarasenko, a prospect, and a first. We end up getting a BETTER roster player than Tkachuk (second highest scorer behind McD), one of the top-20 defensemen in the league, a prospect, and a pick.
Total fleecing by our GM. If I were a Panthers fan, I would still be pissed.

Well...to be fair...the pick is gone.

Imagine if Schwindt cracks the bottom 6 out of camp. That'd be a nice early bonus.

how would Ruzicka know that kind of detail in Tkachuk's contract negotiation?

I suspect everybody in an NHL organization knows waaaay more than anybody let's on. Like what you or I THINKwe know is probably less than 1 percent of what actually goes on and is talked about behind the scenes.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that, his work compatriot mentioned this desire in passing during the course of the season.
Perhaps at the gym, perhaps at the buffet table or restaurant, perhaps even in the locker-room.
These guys see each other more than they see their wives.
At the very least I'd consider is plausible that he knew this. My only reservation is that such a demand is so insane that I wonder if it was a joke or a misunderstanding.
A player demanding a Captaincy as a contractual obligation? If I'm a GM there is zero fataing way I say 'yes' to that. None. Hard No.
Sorry, you want to be the Captain? Earn it. Step up and earn it. No? And thats a sticking point? Buh-bye.
Chucky wont be a Captain in Florida either.
He just doesnt have what it takes. I've said this in the past, Tkachuk strikes me as a Mercenary. He comes from a Professional Hockey Family. He will do exactly what you pay him to do. Thats it. There is nothing wrong with that, but conversely, you dont get extras if thats your attitude either.
You want to be 'Captain for Life?' There is value to that. Your $9.5M is now $9. No? Buh-Bye.
Contractually appointed Captains dont inspire people. There isnt another level there.
He's a good player, but if he's not invested then he's just another piece on the board.

Imagine pulling off those antics in the Dallas series and thinking "yeah, I'm captain material". He didn't know how to pick his spots.
I don't know if the thing about demanding the captaincy is true (it's not like he'll be named the captain in Florida either, I think he just wanted out) but it seems like there was a disconnect between him and the team over what a captain/leader should look like. I think he'll be happy in Florida though, I think they're definitely going to encourage the theatrics to attract more fans and attention to the team.

Okay, I've kind of been slagging Tkachuk in this thread, and I dont mean to do that. I loved him during his time here, he was a giant pain in the ass, but he was our pain in the ass.
The textbook definition of a player that you absolutely loathe unless he's on your team.
But yeah, Floridians love their asshattery. He's going to be a god in that inexplicable Kingdom of tropically humid insanity.
Either way, I think I'm actually pleased with the turn of events. He gets to continue on with his career and we completely re-tooled our team. Its win/win/win for all involved and we move along.

According to Sens fans, some reporter apparently said Brady has a similar clause in his contract. But I’m not sure how factual that is.
