Not really opening/closing related but apparently Bow Valley Square was sold this morning. Oxford is out and the new owner is Armco Capital.

I just noticed that they’ve torn down the hooker macs plaza on 4th Ave! (Not to be confused with crack macs).

Poco Loco in that plaza was a pretty sketchy, dirty, dive bar but they had some surprisingly good pizza.

Tent / bubble wrap was all laid out yesterday when I rode by about 6pm. Am guessing the big inflate is happening today or over the weekend.

I did not know that was a hooker macs. Caught me by surprise the first time I went into that Macs way back in the day. I thought I entered a brothel or something.

That whole street used to be full of ladies of the night. With the French Maid there, it was good post dance marketing.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but D.O.P. is moving to Marda Loop.

I thought originally they were going to move into the grain exchange building, but I guess that never came to fruition. I did notice walking through the plus 15 they are opening a DOP express in think it was 5th Ave place

The Chick-Fil-A sign has landed on the location set to open on MacLeod before 2025. No official date yet.

The 7-11's closing caught me by surprise. Went in to the one on Southland and Elbow last Friday to grab a slurpee. Then the next day I wanted another one, and when I walked inside the entire store was empty and they only had the slurpee machines running but they had no cups for them at all, so I walked out sad lol

Right?? I hadn't heard anything about it.

I went to get milk for my coffee and the place was boarded up.

Totally caught by surprise.

What do convenience stores even make their money from in 2024? They can’t rely on former staples like cigarettes and magazines anymore. People buy pop and snacks from Costo or Superstore these days. So lottery tickets and low-grade hot dogs?

Blue collar workers get multiple coffees and sodas a day / week and add in snacks and these are cash cows

The margins on thing they sell are through the roof

Tobacco is now 4th.

A lot of them have gas stations attached. It's the stand-alone locations that are closing.

People aren't buying pop and chips there as often for budgetary reasons so they've increased the hot food they sell like chicken, pizza and low-grade hotdogs. You can get lunch for about $6 which is cheaper than most fast food places.

They've also gone hard on selling coffee and fresh-ish pastries.

First of all....the gas stations are essentially killing themselves.

"Pay-at-the-Pump"

I dont even bother going in to the store.

Although I do like your use of the term 'Fresh-ish' that seems pretty accurate.

However, despite in-expensiveness, I dont eat 'gas station food.'

I've learned that lesson. The hard way.

Oh sorry I saw it on reddit today getting some discussion. Apparently they've added a drive thru window to the building so theres speculation on it becoming a new restaurant potentially.
