This would be a trade the Oilers should be getting in on.
Flames could continue to use good defensemen like this but would have to move Brodie to the left side and get rid of Wideman or Engellend

From the article:
“The problem with them trading Travis Hamonic,” one exec said, “is they want… Travis Hamonic.”
So that would be Brodie or Hamilton which makes no sense.
It really sounds like Hamonic wants out. Islanders wlll maybe get an equivalent forward or maybe a stud prospect not in the NHL.

The best the Flames could do is offer a package based around one of our UFA's (Hudler/Russell) and package a prospect or 2 as well
Oilers might move Yak for a Dman like Harmonic. Yak has been a bust but still has that potential tag attached to him and looked good with McDavid

Why would the Islanders want Yak when they stated they want an equal defenseman in return? The Oilers have no equal defensemen to offer, so they are automatically out.

If the Oilers offered Nurse + Eberle, that might get the Isles interested but still leaves a big hole in their top pairing for the short term.

I would offer Hudler and Russell for Hamonic. You'd think the Isles are at a point where they would like to make some noise.

That seems like a lot for Hamonic, no? If I were the Oilers, I wouldn't want to give much more than Nurse, maybe add a draft pick.

What team is going to trade an equal Dman? Name an example of a possible return and a team that would do it?
If the islanders are going to move him for a quality return they might have to look at a veteran (28+) or a forward.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Credit to @FriedgeHNIC on Hamonic story. He has family concerns in West Canada and requested a move before the season...

Hamonic loves the Isles. This is personal. Wpg, Edmtn, Cgy and Van all preferred. Might expand to other west cities. Tough on Isles....
Sounds like he don't care where he goes as long as its in western Canada.
I can see Chiarelli getting this done really fast.
Wouldn't surprise me either if Treliving made it happen with Russell/Wideman + either.

Was thinking the Oilers would also get Okposo back, but didn't put it in my post.

Nurse + Eberle for Harmonic + Okoposo? Interesting.
Mind you I think the Oilers would hope they can hang on to Nurse as he is their one lone bright spot on defense.

Would you guys be okay with Gio for Hamonic straight up? Offensive skill and leadership are washed by age and contract price?

I think it's a fair trade. Islanders are in a win now situation while the Flames are 3 years away. Could work out for both teams.

I doubt the islanders would want to trade a young cost effective D man, for an old probably over paid long term defenseman. If Gio hadn't signed his extension they would probably be interested.
