Adam Ružička on Tkachuk leaving Calgary: “I don’t know what else played a role there but he really insisted on becoming a captain and I think they couldn’t fulfill that request which played a big role in him leaving”

Yeah that's not a player you want to give a captaincy to. Same with one who has a foot out the door. No thanks. He's a guy who would use being captain to try and negotiate an even bigger contract.

I loved Tkachuk as a Flame and I appreciate that he facilitated a sign and trade which benefited us.

But I don't like the narrative that he did it to help the Flames. He did it specifically to get out now, and to maximize a new contract off of last season's 100+ point production which he wouldn't be able to do without Gaudreau/Lindholm and another miracle season. It just happened to also benefit the Flames.

Any Slovakian speakers here who can listen to the podcast and confirm that's what was said in context?

It's hard to believe someone on Ruzicka's level would be privy to that sort of info, but it could certainly be a rumour swirling among the players.

We've discussed this at length over the years, but I have to agree.

Overall I dont see that Tkachuk never really seemed to exhibit the leadership qualities that you need in a Captain.

My opinion on it has always been centered around the concept of does he just create a disturbance? Or does he elevate his team?

The point of some of this is to elevate his teammates and drag them into the fight, to get things going and I dont feel that he really did that. He's ancillary, he's the side-show, a wing-man. Not the Leader.

Now...you know who does do all of those things? Nazem Kadri.

I’d just like to say that six weeks after the fact, I still cannot believe this trade actually happened.

Kinda figured. Funny he went to FLA though who's not losing their Captain any time soon. In the next decade

But on the flip side, if someone on Ruzicka's level heard that, imagine how loud his request was.

I think he was done with Calgary as soon as the Muzzin incident happened. Acted pouty after that (especially in the garbage day press) and there were rumours of a rift between him and the team when Eichel rumours were swirling. Probably also disliked Sutter but sucked it up to maximize his value on a contract year.

I know he put up elite numbers this year but I preferred his style of play in his first three years in the league compared to the last three. Played with a lot more tenacity and lived up to those draft year scouting reports about him being elite below the hash-marks and along the boards. Became more reliant on a skill game later on and lost some of those qualities that made him great IMO.

He was on the team, you don't need years of service to start hearing rumours or have conversations. Maybe Tkachuk himself said it to him?

Really makes me wonder if Tkachuk for Eichel was on the table.

If Tkachuk for Eichel was one for one, hindsight, I think I like the trade we got from Florida more.

And if Buffalo said no?

Regardless of motivation, it did help the Flames. He could have named one team instead of giving a list of them. Whether or not he did that to help the Flames or to capitalize on last year's stats knowing there would be no line with Gaudreau/Lindholm this year, who knows.

Oh absolutely! But who really thought we'd get that haul? Also makes me think that Treliving knew Tkachuk was going to bolt.

There is no way we would have gotten more from Buffalo. Unless they were going to re-sign Chucky for $12 mil/per.

In theory, Buffalo could have then done the Florida trade themselves. Would have been interesting.

I find it hard to believe they wouldn’t have offered him the C, especially with Johnny leaving. Unless our coaching staff/front office didn’t see him as captain material

I dont.

That would undermine so much of the work that Sutter has done in terms of establishing a team identity and work ethic.

Look at how tight that group was last season, that is a direct result of the atmosphere that Sutter has fostered and frankly, I'd sooner see Looch with the 'C' than Chucky.

That 'C' was up for grabs all season and nobody got it. I think if it was just handed to Chucky you'd tear down a lot of what Sutter built up, and for what?

My guess is they asked Sutter and he laughed and hung up the phone.
