Matthews has played 75+ games in a season only twice in his career, and one of those was his rookie season.

Since his brilliant 23-24 campaign, his level of play seems to be going in the wrong direction, and his other-worldly scoring ability seems to have faded somewhat.

I think he's slightly injury prone and his best days are behind him. Still a very good player, but not going to be an elite scorer again.

Ovechkin's situation is different. He had those 2 relatively down years in 10-11 and 11-12, but at that time he was still in his early 20s and hadn't been through many injuries. There wasn't much reason to believe that injuries were taking a toll on him or having a cumulative effect. Matthews has been through more injuries than Ovi had at that point in his career.

And now with this MCL tear, who knows how he looks when he comes back from it.

The MCL tear is a good point. Joe Nieuwendyk never scored less than 45 goals per (full) season up to 1991. Then he tore one of his collateral ligaments – I forget which one – and never topped 40 goals again.

So begins the formal courting. Makar names Male athlete of the year for Calgary.

https://calgaryboosterclub.com/2026/...ers-announced/

Being named the Calgary Booster Club’s Male Athlete of the Year for the second time is an incredible honour. What makes it truly special is knowing how much the Booster Club does for our Calgary sports community,” said Makar.

The Booster Club has always been there to celebrate and support Calgary athletes, helping us grow not just in performance but in character. I’m so grateful to be part of a tradition that continues to inspire athletes and create genuine connection across Calgary.”

Ovechkin was 26-28 years old during those seasons, closer to Matthews age now than "early twenties".

Ok I was off by a couple years, he was actually 25 & 26. But he certainly wasn't 27-28.

Point stands, younger and fewer injures than Matthews.
