I think Matthews will see an Eichel level resurgence if he gets traded. The dude is still on pace to be one of the greatest goal scorers of all time, some of the comments in here are funny. 37 goal pace in a season riddled with injures on an awful Leafs team.

Matthews is much older than Eichel was, and his injuries are a major concern.

Plus he's signed for only two years, so he is a flight risk.

Yes he's a very good player, but for how long? It will affect his return.

A team on the cusp of contending can look at him.

But a team starting it's rebuild should not.

Are the injuries a major concern or does that just fit your narrative? I suspect he will come back and continue to be an all-world player. He's 28 not 40.

A lot of the discourse here reminds me of what people were saying about Ovechkin ~10 years ago after he had a string of injuries and poor playoff performances.

6/7 picks in 2026. The first one isn't until the 3rd round.
8/7 picks in 2027. The first round pick is Colorado, which is likely to be 28-32. At least they have a 1st but they're not getting franchise altering player.
in 2028 they have already traded away their 4th. That is the year they need to start rebuilding. Trading away Matthews would be the best time to start that rebuild though. Depends on what they can get back.


You would have to think a roster player, a prospect and a 1st is the starting point.
