Dat shot.
No one's saying Fleury is a future bust right, but a fifth overall pick for a rebuilding team absolutely needs to be a homerun. A solid nhl player is not enough. It's the difference between picking Bogosian or L. Schenn or Pietrolangelo.
As it stands now, the majority of scouting services are saying that Dal Colle will be a better prospect than Fleury. Dal Colle could end up scoring a lot of goals in the nhl, or he might end up being a second liner.
If we draft Fleury, and he turns into a solid 2-4 D-man, while Dal Colle goes on to be a perennial 25 goal scoring all-star, would you be happy?
There will be a future all-star available where we draft, if you were sitting down with Brian Burke, what would you say to convince him that Fleury is that player? Would that pitch be more convincing than the pitch someone could make with Dal Colle?

How about you tell us.
WTF are you even arguing at this point? You are now just arguing with yourself.

Because the scouts, and analysts that actually get a chance to watch these players on a day to day basis, and at more than just the WJC's, Memorial Cup, and top prospects game, tell us he is.
Really it is simple as that. For the most part nobody on CP has the insight to truly rank these players since we don't watch them enough so we have to go on what the rankings and reports say and all the reports say Dal Colle is clearly the better prospect than Fleury.
Doesn't mean he will be a better player, and doesn't mean Fleury is no good, just means that based on the info we have they have told us that Dal Colle is the better prospect.

Ok I agree that dal colle has more upside. But I just think fleury is a safe bet to turn into a 2-4 defenceman. I think dal colle could be a bit of a bust because he's kinda slow. That's my argument against dal colle. Is that he doesn't have a very good skating stride and he struggles to find ways to get speed up through the neutral zone. And saying that scouts consensus say so is not telling me why dal colle is better then fleury. Based on the fact I think that skating is the most important skill to have ok the NHL, I would say fleury needs to at least be considered. And what if he becomes a perennial all star, and dal colle plays 50 games because he never learns to skate at an nhl level and is a defensive liability?

Getting a top four dman who hits, shuts down the other teams top players, and chips in 25-30 points is a home run IMO.

Isn't this how this whole argument started?
I said that after the top 5 they all had question marks and the question mark for Fleury was less top end upside and more of the safe bet.
I can't tell you why Dal Colle is better, I have never watched him play. All the analysts and scouts think he is better though so I tend to take their word for it since I am not a scout and don't analyze hockey players for a living.
Could the scouts be wrong? Sure, but that is all the information I have to work with.
I also think you may be wrong about Dal Colle's skating, don't think that has been brought up as a huge issues by others. He isn't a burner but I don't think it is a weakness.

Not with a 5th pick. That's a single to left field.

Pay attention to this post snipertyper. We need a top liner or a #1 d out of this draft, save depth for the second round.

Ok well I am convinced you guys are just a bunch of Steve tambellinis and mctavishs that would have picked yakupov over Murray. Defence wins championships and we have two true top four dman.

I think I hear what you're saying... that we could use a Weber or a Keith or a Lidstrom or a Chara?

If we had the #1 pick that year, we would have probably picked Murray as well. You are just coming up with bs now. We're not the Oilers.
If we somehow get the #1 pick, we'll pick Ekblad. Fleury isn't worth a #5, I have no idea how you can't get that in your head.

He has potential To be a number 1 d. Like Ryan suter type if he reaches his potential. The guy I compare him to, Jacob trouba will be a number 1 dman in this league. He probably will be a 2-4 dman because players rarely reach their potential. But he's a safe 2-4 with size and speed with oodles of upside to improve offensively. Yes please. 40 points as a shut down defencemen on a BRETT SUTTER coached awful rebels team. When he plays against his peers (ie top prospects game) his size speed and ability to control the game was noticeable against smaller slower competition.

And nobody is arguing that, you will find on CP most advocate drafting BPA (unless you are the Oilers and the best player is a soft forward every season).
I think most here would be fine with Fleury in the 6-10 range if we pick there.
The issue is if we do pick at 5 that means at least one of Dal Colle, Draisaitl, Ekblad, Bennett, or Reinhart are left and based on all reports those 5 players are better than Fleury.
That is all everybody is arguing, not sure why you think we have some vendetta against d-men or Fleury because of this.

Well this thread has been successfully trolled. If you want to talk endlessly about Fleury why don't you start your own thread about him and see who's interested in discussing that or just drop it

Mr. Fleury, we like your boy, we really do. It is just that we think we might have better alternatives available to us at #5. Best of luck.

But there is no guarantee that is what he becomes. Is it really that hard to see/understand that?

And what if he becomes a AHL lifer and Dal Colle goes on to score 500 goals and 1500 points?
