I think I liked that more than the 40th, which was a bit self indulgent. This was 3.5hrs of fan service, and there's nothing wrong with that

Lil Wayne? What a waste of valuable airtime.

I saw it reported earlier that Aykroyd and Bill Hader were both unable to make it. I was surprised that Carvey wasn't there, especially after he made so many appearances earlier this season.

I assume that was their tribute to SNL's notoriously bad sound mix on the musical guests.

Quite a few noticeable absences, including John Goodman’s, who was as frequent a host as Steve Martin at some point. He’s filming overseas with Tom Cruise. Timberlake is another one.

As a side note, it has occurred to me that there’s only one plausible explanation for pumping Mulaney so hard everywhere. Somebody sees him as Michaels’ successor. Either NBC, or Lorne himself.

Btw, big feature article on Lorne Michaels in the New Yorker Magazine (Jan-20 issue). Almost a biography.

thanks for posting the Farley. I hadn't connected in my head last night (and I assume may still be a coincidence)with the Abbey road medley- awesome choice anyhow- being played by Sir Paul

God I hope not. I find him an utter bore.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Mulaney so I hope he isn't in the running for a significant role at SNL.

It genuinely hurt to hear Phil Hartman's voice introducing Deep Thoughts.

Edit: And of course all the other moments with Farley and Norm as well.

Sandler's song is also a tough watch when he gets to those 3.

If they don't hand it to Tina it's a big mistake IMO.

If I were betting on it (and given the world we live in, it's probably something you can get action on), my money would be on Tina, Seth, and Jost as the most-likely to take over from Lorne, in that order, if they want it.

Sandler's song was the highlight if you're a long time viewer.

I tend to think when Lorne Michael's retires it'll go to a non-performer (like he was).

I really enjoyed the Byrne segment, and I'm not a huge fan of David Byrne.

Jack White was really great.

But I have to say it again. While I'm not a super fan of Lady Gaga, you just can't deny her talent and her presence is just next level.

Sandler was the highlight. Good to see Eddie Murphy back in the club.

After Lorne - could be Tina or Higgins.

Higgins has been too far removed from SNL for a while and hadn’t really done much since leaving. Fey is more of a comedienne herself than a producer/manager. I can only imagine the inner politics and jockeying for advanced consideration that might be going on there now. SNL is an extremely valuable asset to NBC creative content; likely, the most valuable at present. Yet, they might appoint someone the cast likes or someone nobody expects. I was just puzzled by seemingly endless promotion of Mulaney everywhere for no good reason. If they are going to pick from the ex-staff, I do think Seth Meyers is a more credible all-round candidate than Frey though.
