It is the Flames way: we end up paying at the peak, giving up a 1st for a year of Monahan, then are sitting on a giant pile of space, just when the price drops. The Flames are cursed. They have always been cursed. They will forever be cursed. It is our fate.

It's just the pains of a short sighted GM entering the last year of his contract. That "Summer of Treliving" was a shining example of what not to do as a leader. He was reacting emotionally, and had a very narrow focus.
Now, instead of having a 30 year old #1 centre producing at a .92PPG who could absolutely be our current Captain (or he could have left in free agency), we're down a 1st round pick and have a 34 year old centre producing at .62PPG.
I don't think there's any sort of curse, it was just incompetence brought on by impatience, emotions, and contractural status. The organization should never have let Brad handle that business that Summer. It should have been an extension signed before the end of the season, or an announcement of parting ways a few days after Edmonton destroyed us.

The curse is the fact that cap space is less valuable, while we're tanking and have lots of it. But don't miss any opportunity to hack on the team and Treliving.

So...is anyone distraught to see Dreary Drury basically torpedo his team by having the Kreider and Trouba made publicly available? Trouba's name was out in the summer and I believe he wants to finish the year in New York as his wife is in her last year of med school or a residency. I see that the Rangers are ready to strip him of the C. The uglier this gets the happier I'll be.
The Kreider one stunned me as I didn't think he was a guy the team didn't like. Hopefully this one really blows up in Drury's face.
Both guys being older likely meand the return should be peanuts. Hopefully it costs him to offload these contracts.

Something clearly rotten in that room....and it looks like a veteran/young guy split from a distance.
Laviolette seemingly taking little heat for the teams performance either.
A G that wants insane money.
Pretty wild what's going on there.

Blake Wheeler leaving his mark on the Rangers.
Sent packing from Winnipeg and suddenly they are better. Goes to the Rangers and they are in tatters.

That Kadri sequence wasn’t good the day it went down. Not much of a curse when the GM who had dead cap because of bad UFA signings went all in on signing an aging UFA. Most GMs didn’t think it was worth the cost.

Last year the Rangers won the President's Trophy, had a 10-game winning streak, and lost in the semifinals to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions. Not sure Wheeler was the problem.

Most GM’s? If that’s the kind of thinking, couldn’t the same be said for every UFA signing both good and bad?
It was a reach, for sure, but let’s not forget that the common question at the start of the 2022 season was ‘is this years version of the Flames better than last?’ I recall the Athletic had them as cup finalists.

Huberdeau has had a decent story. Does Huberdeau at 5.25 million have any value?

Just my opinion I think if he can contribute similar numbers for the remainder of this season and 3 more seasons the Flames could move him eventually. I doubt anyone wants that contract until there is between 2-3 years left. Also I would be shocked if Flames ownership will retain more than 3 years maybe not even that. I think Huberdeau is here for sometime yet.

Expanding on the thought of what kind of return the flames could get for Vladar… what could they get from Colorado if it was an Andersson + Vladar package?
To Colorado:
Andersson (50% retained)
Vladar
To Calgary:
2025 1st round pick (top 5 protected)
Ritchie
Georgiev
Instead of getting a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Vladar and a 1st round pick + 2nd round pick + B-level prospect for Andersson in separate trades, they get a 1st round pick + A-level prospect (Ritchie) in a single trade of both players. This trade targets quality instead of quantity which I think is a smart move. Colorado helps both their defensive game and their goaltending in a single trade. It’s an all in move from Colorado who is in the thick of their window to win championships.

To me Huberdeau as a UFA is about as valuable as Jeff Skinner
Same age, both had some good/great seasons (Huberdeau's peak point obviously much high but Skinner has had 30+ goals 6 times on much worse teams)
Skinner got a 1 year deal for 3 million coming off a 46 point season. Huberdeau had 52 points last season with less goals.
That is about the price tag I think teams would be valuing Huberdeau at for FREE
He is a Flame for life unless there is a free compliance buyout period or something.

What is the decent story?
Perhaps you are referring to his past?
His present story and expected future is quite bleak.
Because he has 6+ years left, even at $5.25M, the risk is too great for any team to take.
And hard to imagine Murray biting the bullet on $35M when Calgary does not need the cap space.

If Colorado is truly trying to win the cup is Vladar to guy they’re going to ride or die with? Pointed this out earlier today but, he’s got 88 career starts under his belt.

Fair question but with what's available out there in the market it feels like he's right in the sweet spot cap wise. Sure there's better goalies but their cap even with retention is problematic for the Avs I think.
And I think at this point the Avs might be able to be happy with just average to slightly below average goaltending to make it work for them.
And it's not like Vladars been playing badly. We should not try to diminish a players current level of play just because he's only played a certain amount of games.

When considering contract and how he’s playing right now, I would consider Vladar to be the best goaltender available right now IMO. Gibson is too expensive and too big of a cap hit and is a bigger risk because of his contract. And there’s no commitment to Vladar past this season so Colorado could go after something else in the summer.
I’m proposing combining the value Vladar + Andersson + retention + taking back salary of a struggling goaltender to maximize return. There might be other teams that could offer a goaltender close to the quality of Vladar but I’m not sure if there are any other teams that could offer this kind of package.
