And then you can add Gibson on top of it all. Who knows, perhaps there’s more.
Of course, all these guys have/had their warts, but you would be fooling yourself if you don’t think others see Vladar is the same, or similar, light.

I don't think it's fooling ourselves to rightfully claim that Vladar is way less warty than all of the fellows you mentioned.
- Mrazek has been given the reigns of starter by like 4 different teams and fallen flat ever time.
- Merzlinkins? You must be kidding with this one.
- Binnington is an absolute headcase. But, may be a more proven goalie. Hard to dispute this tbh. But I think that the Blues would prefer to keep him as they seem to have something left in the tank. Pumped winnipeg yesterday. They still want to compete.
- Blackwood has also been given 2 shots as a starter with no results.
Vladar was a high performing AHL goalie who was backup on a terrible defensive squad. He's showing great upside as a 1B Starter this year. I think he's got a way more interesting case than any of the goalies you mentioned. He's never been given a crack at starting and carrying the starters load only to fail, like all others you mentioned.

Dan Vladar has 88 career starts. That should tell you something. Granted they’re not all the same age but Blackwood is, has dealt with significant injuries and has more than twice the amount of starts. If Vladar is this diamond in the rough, why has no team stepped up and offered, at least, a second round pick for him? Should have been done well before now if the goaltending scouts/coaches around the league felt he was a tier above all these other bums.
Hell, what are one of these supposed 'desperate’ teams waiting for? Pretty sure he could be had for a second round pick from the sounds of things.

I'm sure there were. With how they've been playing their goalies, I can't think of any reason for starting him in back-to-back games, with the way they've been sharing the crease, especially after he was lit up on Saturday, other than they've got teams scouting him pretty hard right now.
Both Saturday and last night's game were high profile games too for the Flames (Saturday, being hockey night and Tuesday being Gaudreau's night). He also got last Saturday's game. Feels very much showcasing to get a deal done soon, particularly since there are a few teams that need a goalie.

Vladar has two shutouts in 8 games. Though he has one or two ugly ones mixed in there as well.

Wolf was apparently under the weather last night, per Stienberg.

Most teams are probably intrigued by Vladar but don't have a great book on him because he plays for a small market team in Calgary and ran into a couple of injury years. And Calgary probably has a minimum value that they feel they need to get for him.
It's probably why they're showcasing him right now to give other teams a good sense of his abilities. Teams don't just throw away 2nd round pick on guys if they haven't seen a ton of them until they really get a good sense of what the player can do.

Wolf has been sick for a few days and they thought it best to give him a little more time to get back to full strength.

Ha... that's a good reason then.
Still feels like they're giving him the higher profile Saturday games. He's started the last three.

I think the desperate teams are all hoping he can be had for a 3rd, as you say. But Conroy is right to hold out for a 2nd at least, and IMO he will get it before the trade deadline.
It may be that the 2nd has also already been offered, but it's coming with a cap hit and the flames want to be paid for that too. Recall the Markstrom trade negotiations being wrapped around this exact point (well, in reverse with retention but same idea) for a long time.
If the flames are being offered Georgiev and a 2nd for example, they may be saying "not enough." Vladar being worth the 2nd and the salary coming back (pro rated $3million bucks it would seem) would be worth probably a 3rd or 2nd on it's own based on former years.

I think all teams do have a good book on him. Teams employ scouts, full time, and pay them to have books on every goalie in the league as well as the AHL and, likely, ECHL and Europe.

These things are at odds with one another. If a team is desperate, they probably are not going to hesitate to give up a 2nd instead of a 3rd.
I don’t think the teams that are being discussed as ‘desperate’ are all that desperate and they have other options and they know this.

Desperate in GMing doesn't necessarily mean a team is going to raise their offer. New Jersey was desperate for Markstrom before last year's trade deadline. They didn't just pay whatever Conroy was asking for to do that deal just because they were desperate.

It's too early in the season and the standings are too bunched up for a GM to be truly desperate at this point.

Desperation, to me, implies you’re willing to go above and beyond. Was NJ desperate? Or is there annother word for being really really desperate? Evidently, they were not desperate enough.
In this case we’re talking about a second round draft pick. That doesn’t sound like desperation. Or does it? What’s the likelihood of a third round pick playing in the NHL vs a second round pick? Not significant I’d guess.

It's almost like there might be shades of grey, with a word like desperate.

Sometimes I get the sense that NHL teams' pro scuting is a lot less sophisticated than we assume. The Flames have 4 guys hired full time and it's been pretty recent that they even upped it to that number.

Yes language is a slippery thing.
Some of my favourites you might question around here.
Immediately fired = they’re doing a good job
Massive overpayment = fair and reasonable
Desperate = yeah, maybe?

I don’t know. Whether it’s scouts, coaches, GM’s ect, I think today’s organizations are pretty well covered.
Jordan Sigalet, I’d imagine, has a ‘book, on every goalie in the league at minimum. Labarbara as well. Any team with a goaltending coach, I’d bet, would have a book on almost all goalies in the league. They also use this book to inform shooters.
As it relates to Vladar, I’d be shocked if there is any team who doesn’t have a book on. He’s been playing professional hockey in NA for 9 years now. I’d go even further and say it’s a gaurantee all teams would have a book on him, and probably have for years.
